Unless you've attended a hang gliding competition, you might not get this one without some explanation. The orange cone is the target for the spot-landing event -- hit the cone and win the prize. One of our most popular flying sites includes a cow pasture as a landing zone (lz), which often becomes an obstacle course with live slow-moving hazards (and the slippery green residue they leave behind..yecch!). This and other illustrations by yours truly can be found in the official publication of the United States Hang Gliding Association (circulation 10,000). -JT (a.k.a. Airhog)
By the way, if you should find yourself on the northern Oregon coast around the Tillamook area this weekend, be sure to look up occasionally. You're likely to see the skies filled with multi-colored sails as part of the Oceanside Open hang gliding meet. That's where I'll be... --- Jim Tibbs, cartoonist
