Puppy Love Connections

Posted by Picasa
Well, it's been dogs on the mind ever since I've returned from Southern Idaho. That column for the River Journal is just about written, but a few paragraphs remain, since yesterday was "dog day" afternoon here. Webster arrived. He's the pup on the right, while Kea's his sister on the left. Their first human mother Debra and human sister Erica brought Webster to Sandpoint.
After a couple of days of playing the "underdog" at the Lovestead, Kea was happy to see her brother. Kiwi still hasn't commented about all this commotion, but she made it clear to Webster, through that Border Collie herding instinct, that Kea is hers. Webster didn't seem to care.
Now, Webster has a second human mom, a real sister and a temporary big sister. He also has a granny yellow dog named Annie Dog who growls out reminders to "leave my plate alone" and "don't come too close to me." Webster shows respect to the elderly and stays away from Annie Dog.
Both Kea and Webster have learned the routine of going to the barn while human mom No. 2 does her chores. They sit attentively watching all details of shoveling, feeding and leading horses to their stalls. In between that, they attack each other or the big rubber ball or the rubber curry comb.
Tiny time slots in their lives at this time are major, so I'm hoping that each tiny time slot will mean oodles of puppy fun and some long-lived lessons about where to poop and pee and what not to chew upon.
It's work, yes, to keep track of their every move, but I also feel sorry for people who do not have the room nor the opportunity to enjoy animals. We are so fortunate to have both space and plenty of delightful moments of pure animal joy.
Plus, we're fortunate to make new friends in the process. Thank you, Debra, and your daughters, for giving these young pups such a wonderful, loving start.
