An afternoon with the Birds

Another reason to travel to North Idaho: the Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center

Bill and I had a wonderful and relaxing afternoon yesterday driving through the stunningly beautiful farmland southeast of Sandpoint to visit the Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center at Glengary just off the shore of Lake Pend Oreille.

We picked a good time cuz the crowd size was down but locals were still showing up after a busy weekend of multiple people-drawing events in the community.

Our first sighting was a Border Collie named Finnegan. It took just a few minutes of talking to the kids running the strawberry lemonade stand to learn that their parents were both former students of mine: Adrienne Davis and Vern Nelson. This couple is rearing some phenomenal youngsters who had to have made a mint off their tasty lemonade.
Their mom spent the weekend in the kitchen preparing lunch goodies for visitors. She and Vern are both valued employees of the Birds, who not only own a nice museum and invention center but also have a flourishing garden which made me want to go back to square one on my own growing program.

The museum, which is open from mid-May to mid-October on Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., is impressive, to say the least. I told Bill that a person would need most of a day to digest its offerings, which include everything from Bird respirators (invented by owner Dr. Forrest Bird) to helicopters, vintage planes and mint condition Model A's and limos.

I enjoyed our visit because we could not only take in the display highlights but we also enjoyed some quality visits with the folks we met along the way. Only problem was that Bill kept disappearing among the displays, and every time I'd spot him a few hundred feet ahead of me, I'd run into someone I knew.

And, when I run into someone I know, it's not usually a three-second, "Hi, how do you do." I eventually found him, we purchased some of that good strawmonade and enjoyed a drive back to the Bottle Bay Road via the Eureka route.

Great afternoon, and everyone who comes to Sandpoint ought to visit the Bird Museum (http://www.birdaviationmuseum.com/).
