I wonder about many things these days. This morning I'm wondering what we did wrong this time to deserve Mother Nature's wrath. Our damage at the Lovestead is minimal compared to the unfortunate families who lost their homes in the Spokane area because of a surprising and punishing wind storm that blew with vengeance through the area yesterday afternoon and evening.
To say it wreaked havoc is grossly understated. Everything is relative, and here at the Lovestead I'm mad because everything I did for four hours yesterday while mowing the lawn appears useless this morning as thousands of leaves and branches and cones dot the landscape. So, another few hours will go into cleaning it all up.
I'm wondering this morning if my blossoming beans made it through a mid-July night, cold enough for frost to form on my rake handle. The green beans look as it they may have got bitten. A few hours from now I'll know the verdict cuz it usually takes a few hours after a freeze for the full damage to appear.
I'm also wondering, as I've done several times in the past few months, how low our nation is going to go before we take full grasp of the reality that we're headed down the tubes. Seems like everything points toward it--- continually rising gas prices, plummeting stocks, food prices skyrocketing, services diminishing, jobs disappearing, etc. The list of signs, right before our very eyes, goes on.
This is the first time in my life that I've had the feeling that the "greatest nation on earth" is suffering from a variety of life-threatening diseases. I've seen no evidence with this continuing spiral to indicate that anyone of leadership has the guts or the wherewithal to do anything about it. Why are the entities that seem to be benefitting personally from all this demise still going about their business of raking in the goods at the expense of all the rest of us? Seems like they know no consequences.
I wonder if any of these people have that human quality called conscience. Apparently not, cuz I've seen nothing on their end to make any changes in their greedy consumption for the good of America.
That game show I've mentioned a time or two in past postings with our Darcy as a contestant seems to sum it up. One of the disturbing elements I noticed and hated from the beginning was the apparent glee the Japanese audience derived while watching the Americans fall into icy water, get smothered with flour or just plain look like fools.
Could this game-show audience behavior be a metaphor for the way the world actually views us these days?
Could there be good reasons for such ghoulish perceptions? Will we continue to be the laughingstock of the world as other countries on this globe slowly take advantage of the greed that seems to be eating away at the greatness so many of us have proudly observed in this nation throughout our lifetimes.
I never dreamed that I would live in a time when we would harbor such doubts about the future of America. I hope some smart folks can step up to the plate and make the tough decisions to help us get back on track. And, I hope we, as Americans, can see the wisdom of their ways and participate in the process by working with solutions for the problems that seem to be pulling us down by the bootstraps.
I wonder if we'll see what's happening before our very eyes in time to do something about our daily free fall. We've rolled up our sleeves as a nation before. I hope we can do it again before its too late and before we all fall into that pool of icy water while others in seats of superiority laugh at our helplessness with such disturbing delight.

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

This is still the greatest nation on earth. The American people are strong, courageous and resilient and we'll get through these hard times as we've gotten through others. I, too, would love to see some strong leadership guiding this great nation. I am greatly disappointed in the current crop of politicians - from both sides of the aisles. But basically they (the politicians) just need to get out of the way and let American ingenuity create new ways of doing things so we can continue to thrive. And since many people from every country on earth are still trying to come here to live - we can't be all that bad!
Hope all is well. Enjoy reading you every day!

I can't believe you had a frost! How are your beans?
They're going to make it, Connie. I was astounded to rub it off that rake handle this morning.
And, Julie, thanks for reading and commenting. I agree with you about the majority of Americans. We're a hard-working lot who don't deserve to pay the consequences of those whose greed puts us in the situations we're seeing these days.
Chin up! Our resilience is still in tact!
I think time changes things, and if the United States is going to continue to successfully exist, we will have to adapt to the times, something we're being forced to do more and more. The rising gas prices are the common denominator which indicates trouble brewing on the horizon for every aspect of Life As We Know It...and also, in our country's "representative Democracy", graft and corruption (at least a certain amount of it) will live and thrive as it does in the shoes of someone who has athlete's foot. I don't see any kind of Utopia happening anytime soon; I suppose that if we can just collectively tread water, we're doing what we can in this age of turbulence. In one way, I'd like to live forever, but at the same time, I'm not sure if I, knowing me better than anyone else, could 'make it' if I was up-and-coming today. It's nuts out there.
