A Fair day

I'm headed off early this morning for the Kootenai County Fair. Barbara and Laurie are probably loading horses as I type this posting. They planned to leave at 5:30 to get to Coeur d'Alene in time to prepare three horses (Lefty, Dusty and April) for halter showing, which starts at 8 a.m.

I told them I'd meet them there, since there's watering to do and a few other morning chores around here. The doggies are going with me this morning. It's been a banner week for Kiwi. She accompanied Bill on his day-long hike near the Shorty Peak area of the Smith Creek drainage yesterday.

He says she's getting better and better at the fly fishing, even going ahead to search out the best fishing holes in the stream. Bill says she has a good eye as a fish finder. She's also very careful to stay out of his way when he presents the fly and that she has the whole routine down perfectly.

By the way, to my friend Helen, I must report that Bill returned last night with his take-out fish and chips from the Bonners Ferry Zips. Don't know if he's tried Michael's new franchise in Sandpoint yet.

Both Kiwi and Kea get to go to the fair down south, but I must admit to being a bit nervous after reading about how the governor of Montana and his Border Collie got kicked out of the Western Montana Fair earlier this week. Kiwi and I know that feeling of humiliation firsthand from an earlier experience a couple of years ago.

We're going to lay low and hope this fair allows our pups (on leashes, of course) on the grounds. If not, Barbara and Laurie have a problem too, cuz PETA's going with them. Maybe the horses will have to show themselves if we get hauled off by the gestapos.

We'll see. We'll keep our fingers crossed for a good day for horses and dogs at the "dog and pony" show.

Michael Boge's new Zip's in Dr. Marienau's old building on the highway near Division opened Monday and he has been doing a land office business since! The food is great and the decor is one-of-a-kind with his grandfather's surf board, old wood skis, photos of old family boats, and, of course, a couple from Ross Hall.
The $1.49 daily special I tried of a chicken sandwich with Litehouse ranch dressing was scrumptious, especially topped off with an order of Walla Walla sweet onion rings and a huckleberry milkshake! Skip loves the fish and chips after Bill's recommendation.
