Saturday Slight

The garden puts on a daily show, and I can't resist snapping photos, so bear with me.

Happy Saturday to all. Today we'll be attending a Golden Wedding Anniversary party at Gold Creek.

Our golden friends are the Albertsons---Don and Teri.

Salt-of-the-earth people as are all their family.

So, we'll be joining in on the celebration as we do in a lot of Albertson family doings.

Congratulations to Don and Teri.

Walter Cronkite's death is certainly a journalistic milestone. The guy chronicled so many major events in our lifetime. I thought it was nice that CBS News devoted its entire half hour to him last night.

Count me in among the millions who admired Walter. I remember a dream once where I met him down at the old fairgrounds near the canned food booth. That was many decades ago, and it still seems very real. I was beside myself with joy---and then I woke up. Darn it all anyway. It was neat last night to listen to Bob Schieffer, whom Bill and I did see in person back in 1992 walking the halls of Congress.

Bob was telling how he had grown up admiring Walter and couldn't believe it when he actually worked with him. Walter was the epitome of the true newsman, and he will be missed for sure.

I wonder whom we'd choose as the "most trusted person in America" these days.

Did some dewberry picking last night. Kea made it kind of tough cuz she kept running deep into the woods, and I had to keep calling her. There's a home near my "secret" spot now, so I felt a little uncomfortable yelling "Kea" at the top of my lungs. Nevertheless, I picked about 1/3 gallon and may go back this morning to cover an as-yet unpicked area.

Dewberries are not pleasurable in the picking department cuz they have a lot of stickers. The best ones are found in tall grass, and when you're bending over and a spear of that tall grass jabs you right in the eye, you suffer. Still, the jelly is worth every battle scar, so I'll keep adding to the batch I picked last night.

Update on "the pool."

Bill got the filter system going last night, so we ought to have reasonably clean water. The heat from the past two days has been just an after-thought, thanks to the pool. The day before yesterday while splashing around, I looked up to see one of Bert Wood's cows completely entranced. I know she really wanted to come through that electric fence and join me, but she just stood there and stared in wonderment.

I can't believe how much more energy I have in the late afternoon and evening after a good swim. I think Bill concurs cuz he's been making his nightly trips out there too.

Today I saw that the world's oldest man has died----again. Seems like that's happening every two weeks or so.

I can't imagine what a downer that must be. First, you've got to wait for someone else to die. Then, you get the title, and then you die.

I guess if you live that long, any amount of time spent being the oldest of the old is a gift.

This week has been a banner week for me as a member of the SHS Class of 1965. I've heard from both Gretta Fletcher and Shirley Beasley. In both cases, I'm pretty sure "decades" would serve as a measure of how long it's been since I've seen them.

Gretta, whose dad was a barber here in Sandpoint, lives in San Francisco. And, Shirley, with whom I started first grade at Lincoln Elementary, now lives in Mississippi. If I remember correctly, her dad Ora managed the Northern Lights cooperative when they lived here.

It's always fun to reconnect because the good memories of yesteryear come floating back.

Well, it's time to get some stuff done before we go off partying at Gold Creek. So, I'll send best wishes to all for a happy day wherever you are.
