Thursday This and That

On my walk this morning, Dan from down the road, pulled out of his driveway with a trailer full of nice green, fresh-baled hay.

I almost motioned him to go drop it off at my place but just waved and inhaled deeply to enjoy the lovely smell of newly harvested hay.

It's that time of the year when the hay equipment, et. al. passes up and down our road.

Well, usually it does.  We really haven't seen much of it, just yet anyway.

Things are behind schedule this year, and I think it will be at least another week before we see Lori directing Harvey's swather down South Center Valley Road bound for our field and some more at Colburn.

We know not to bug Harvey because Mother Nature has played such havoc with his farming schedule.  So, like everyone else without farm equipment of our own, we'll wait patiently, knowing he's directing his operation as best he can.

Fortunately, I have been able to enjoy some harvests from our place.

Last night's meal included fresh potatoes, green beans and peas, slowly cooked and then smothered in salt, pepper, onion salt, Imperial margarine and melting Tillamook medium cheddar.

Next to the veggies on my plate was a green tossed salad with garden lettuce, chard and Walla Walla chopped sweet onions.  The salad department also included some coleslaw made from garden cabbage.

I'm sure Bill enjoyed fresh strawberries on his late-evening ice cream snack.

It's truly a great time of year for the palate as the garden continues to yield some new fresh flavors almost every day.

Right now, I'm eyeing and monitoring that one row of corn (planted in greenhouse pots) where some stalks exceed six feet and golden-silk-covered ears fatten up by the day.

I'm figuring three or four more days before we butter up some fresh cobs and bite in for all that mouth-watering flavor.

We aren't the only beneficiaries of this garden fun.  Good ol' Lefty who spends most of his day in the "fat' pen away from green grass does get some afternoon treats:  pea shells, corn husks, etc.

Good times.  Good eating.

And, speaking of GOOD times, we'll be having a good time tomorrow when we take our maiden runs on the BYWAY.

Bill just called on his way to work and reported flashing lights near the Holiday Inn Express:  Traffic Revision---7/27/12.  Word is both ends should be open by noon Friday.

I'll have to get down there today and snap a photo.  Truly welcome history in the coming.

Happy Thursday.
