Saturday Slight

Pumpkins are turning yellow.  Actually, the two on each side were picked from the patch, fully yellow,  a couple of weeks ago.

But my "Best of Show" pumpkin has lost most of its green from fair time and is adding its two cents to the fall color show.

I have a manure pile full of additional yellow pumpkins and will be picking them soon for ornamental use and for baking up some more of that wonderful pumpkin bread.

An aside to Joanne:  I'll be happy to give you a couple of my crop in return for your corn stalks.  Just let me know if you're interested.

I'm already loving this weekend.

No big events on the schedule and a promise from my neighbor and high school classmate Gary of a ride through the countryside aboard a hay wagon pulled by his Percherons.

That will be a first for me.  A few years ago after writing a Sandpoint Magazine story about the annual Idaho Draft and Mule Show, one of my interviewees offered me a ride aboard his Clydesdale hitch AT THE SHOW.

Talk about a thrill.

Gary has been associated with the draft horse show for many, many years.  He always takes some of his Percherons to the show, which now occurs in September.

So, he and his drivers have been up and down the roads lately, preparing for the show.   Last night on the way to town, we saw the team over on North Kootenai Road, so we pulled up next to them.

"We'll be going at 4 p.m. tomorrow," Gary said.

So, I'll be hanging out in the driveway about that time, waiting to catch a ride.

Gary stopped next to me on the road yesterday and told me my little horse sure had a pretty head and neck.

Of course, that's the reason I picked Lefty out of the pack when he was just a two-month-old baby over at Ravenwood Arabians in Montana.

His head just seems to get prettier.

Yesterday I took him on a solo afternoon ride up and down our road---almost two miles.  The only problem yesterday:  when we came back past our driveway, he wanted to turn in.

A gentle urging was all it took to get him to keep moving on down the road.

Again, I was pleased with one more confirmation that he's going to turn into a nice saddle horse for an old gal.

I was thinking that I had probably surpassed the most scary moment for life as an old fraidy cat until Annie sent me a video yesterday.

We're planning to meet in Colorado next month, and, of course as usual, Annie likes to come up with some "fun" adventures for our experience.

I asked her if "wheeling" was some sort of extreme sport.  She said the people in charge of the jeeps would be nice to us but then she added that she did pick the most challenging trail.

I was happy and reassured, while watching the video,  to see that smart lady OUTSIDE the jeep, walking.  Could be that Marianne will follow suit.

Somehow I've never even dreamed of the concept of "wheeling" for my bucket list, but, as they say, "life is short."  I'm just hoping not to make it shorter, just yet anyway.

Stay tuned.

Well, the first week of school has passed, and I've heard good reports from the local teachers in the family.

Sounds like they're all off to a good start. One blink and +they'll be talking about parent conferences.

The beat goes on, and it's following a pretty nice rhythm on these beautiful September days.

Happy Saturday.
