Horsin', Homecomings and Such

I had the privilege of spending time with two delightful and well-grounded young people yesterday---one who's found his niche; the other, who's still searching for hers.

Two people sat in the white pickup as it entered the driveway yesterday morning.  I was expecting just one, a Arkansas farrier-school graduate named Cecil.

Well, Emily, a high school senior, came along with Cecil because she is considering a career as a farrier.

She's also in to tinkering with cars and trucks, telling me that she's learned a lot about auto mechanics and horses from her grandfather and that she might choose having an auto body shop as her vocation.

Whatever the case, Emily added some more enjoyment to Cecil's first farrier session with my three horses, CB, Lily and Lefty.

Each horse behaved well about 90 percent of the time, but, as horses will do, each tested his patience, usually with a back hoof.

As mentioned before, Cecil has worked as a hay hand for my sisters.

He's also the son of one of my former students who now has a classroom of her own, and I know from several sources that she's highly respected and loved as a teacher and a 4-H leader.

So, it was fun to get to know Deanna's son.  He's very efficient at his work, and twelve hooves are now looking a lot better than they did before his arrival.

Cecil will come back in the spring to do some trimming and probably nail some shoes on at least one of the herd.

And, Emily will move on, deciding what she wants to do with her life.  After meeting her and spending time with her, I'm sure she'll do well whatever direction she chooses.

While the horses were still in the barnyard, my vet, Dr. Celeste Grace came by to look at a lump on CB's neck near his wind pipe.

I discovered it one morning last week while putting his halter on and knew it had appeared suddenly.

I was pretty convinced that it was an injury because CB always puts his head and neck into some dicey places.  He also rough houses with Lefty---lots of bucking, kicking, biting and chasing each other.

After a week's time, I decided it was time for peace of mind, which, happily Celeste gave me as she inspected the area.

She agreed that it was probably an injury and probably best to let it resolve itself.

So, that made me happy and relieved.

The rest of this week will see some family celebrating and some welcoming home.

Today is our daughter-in-law Debbie's birthday and it's the day Barbara and Laurie, Kevin, Roxzene and Denise have probably been happily anticipating over the past few days----arriving home from Tulsa.

They stayed overnight in Bozeman, Mont., so should be home by mid to late afternoon.

Tomorrow Annie comes home for the weekend, and we're looking forward to a family get-together revolving around the next ZAGS game Friday night.

All good but lots of projects to finish before the fun begins.

So, that's all for today. Gotta get moving.

Happy Wednesday.
