Happy February.
Welcome to the world, first baby calf down the road.
Born Sunday night, this little bull calf and his mom belong to Jack and Colleen Filipowski.
They live about half a mile north of us, and they are aware of my history and love for baby calves. So, they alert me whenever their first few come along.
Jack told me yesterday that he expect 24 calves this year, all coming between now and sometime in March.
The Filipowski's do their best to see that each little one gets a comfy start before taking on the mid-winter elements outside.
So, the maternity ward will be an in-and-out place for mother cows and their brand new babies.
Always fun to see the calves and always a tangible reminder that spring and a whole lot of birth and rebirth will be coming as we continue the yearly cycle.
Speaking of which, I planted my first seed on Sunday. I happen to have a planter inside with a leftover petunia, which seems to be hanging on to life.
So, after my geranium seeds (bright red flowers) came Saturday, I thought it fitting to add a seed to that planter.
We'll see how soon it comes up. In the meantime, it is February, and there will definitely be some more garden and flower seeds going into potting soil over the next few days.
I'll start with the geraniums (always order 50 or 60 and give some of the plants away). They are hearty, and it seems that once they start, nothing gets in their way.
Then, will come tomatoes and pansies and petunias. All can use plenty of time inside to get a good start.
They'll move out to the new greenhouse (with heaters) probably in March, depending on how long winter decides to last.
Anyway, it's exciting to be at the stage where in the "good things happen to those who wait," we have put in the allotted waiting time.
It's time to act and fun to think about what we can nurture or create for this year's summer season.
The calves will keep coming down the road, and visions of cows and calves out grazing on green fields of grass will eventually become reality.
Here at the Lovestead, like so many other places, the real excitement will come with the first crocus popping up, which right now is protected in the ground by at least two feet of snow.
I saw a picture this morning on Facebook of a friend's first crocus in the Boise area.
So, pretty soon, we can start using the word "soon. "
Not too soon, though, cuz we did have new snow yesterday. This batch was acceptable snow, and it did pretty up the landscape a bit.
And, then the blue skies and sunshine came around to enhance the cleaned-up scenes.
Those included in today's photographs were taken on the South Center, Forest Siding, Selle Road loop of our neighborhood.
Enjoy. Happy Tuesday.
