It's glove weather.
Bill told me the temperature was 38 degrees when he took the dogs out.
After grabbing hold of the gate to the barnyard for the first time, my hands told me the same.
The metal was coated with dew, very cold dew.
There also appeared to be a film over portions of the fields and my pumpkin plant, indicating possible light frost.
Guess we'll see later, if the pumpkin leaves are curled up.
I'll probably wear gloves tomorrow when I take the horses to pasture.
The possibility of frost doesn't seem so ominous as it has in past years when tomato plants were loaded with fruit.
This year's poor garden yield has lessened the worries of an early frost.
It may be cold out there, but the sky is blue, and we can see the mountains for the first time in several days.
Looking like a beautiful Saturday ahead.
It's been a busy and productive week for us.
The many mousetraps set out in the garage and the tack room in the barn have gone idle after nabbing a couple of dozen mice.
Bill and I can't figure out why the mice suddenly showed up one day when even overnight temperatures were fairly warm.
It was an onslaught, and those traps were busy, but I think we've headed off the masses for a while.
Bill sawed wood yesterday, and I did some more of the "little things" that make a big difference with general appearances around the place.
It's been nice to have comfortable weather and time for tackling those projects.
I also rode CB again this week, which was nice and mostly fun. He did give me a scare when my sisters' herd of horses went racing past the arena doorway.
CB reacted and started moving faster than I wanted. A few smaller circles, though, did the trick, and he settled down.
To end our week, we got together for dinner with Willie and Debbie. Then, we went to Dubs for some ice cream.
A rumor about plans to tear down Dubs, which has been around for 70 years, was quickly quashed this week. Dubs will remain but will be dormant over the winter and will reopen in the spring.
People around here are pretty thin-skinned about long-beloved icons going down in the name of progress, so it was nice to learn that the Dubs information was just a rumor.
And, so, September moves on from summer to the first hints of fall. Happily, we still have time to enjoy the summer floral colors as leaves begin their fall show.
In general, life is good, and, with less smoke, once again pretty outside.
It's definitely a time with less urgency, a time to simply enjoy life and a time to smell the last of those flowers.
Happy Saturday.
