Bill and I noticed the same startling phenomenon last night.
Suddenly, when we began our after-dinner outside activities, it seemed as if darkness had shown up dramatically earlier than usual.
We usually eat dinner while watching the news from 4:45 to 5:30.
So, to go outside shortly after 6 to get some exercise and to wear off that dinner in almost darkness seemed like a shock.
That dreaded realization came just after we had heard on the news that snow could be falling around here by the weekend on days where highs will be in the mid 40s.
Ouch! Dark AND Snow and Cold?
I'm already adjusting to darkness in the morning with my head lamp and adding layers of clothing for warmth, but snow?
No way!
I never really do adjust to snow, but to have it start in October when most of the leaves haven't fallen to the ground to be swept up and hauled away?
Please, Mother Nature, don't do that to us!
Just don't!
Most of us are still enjoying the fall color show, and to think of snow in just a few days.
Ugh!
We have been gradually accepting the fact that times are changing, even before the official time change coming up in a couple of weeks.
Evening TV watching has replaced short drives, taking walks or other outdoor projects.
In fact, I've been recording all the promising new programs that air after 8 p.m. and have actually started watching one which started a couple of weeks ago.
It should come as no surprise that Alaska Daily with Hilary Swank has piqued my interest. So far, the series hasn't disappointed.
It takes a while to start liking Hilary's hard-nosed character, who's a big-time investigative reporter from the big city, but she's growing on me and I'm starting to appreciate the diversity of the other characters.
I also appreciate all the nuances of journalism showcased in the series and especially the timeliness of what's current challenges within the profession and throughout our polarized populace.
Some aspects have already reminded me of some of the nasty behavior we're experiencing right here in Sandpoint, Idaho.
And, I'm enjoying the scenic and phenomenal footage of Alaska, especially since I've never visited the state.
It's nice each year to get sucked into a couple of new offerings which are well done and refreshing to go along with the longtime favorites, including ZAG basketball.
In the preparation for the many pre-winter to do's, which suddenly appear to be more urgent than expected, both Bill and I are getting our Covid boosters tomorrow.
Which means that we'll be fairly useless on Thursday, but will still rise to the occasion because Annie is coming home for the weekend one day after her birthday. So, a celebration will be in order.
In the meantime, with whatever quality daylight time is available, we'll be scurrying around, hoping to button up as much as possible.
I don't know what we'll do about the leaves and the rest of the brush hogging if the snow sticks around.
I guess we'll figure it out as usual when we dig deep into our much polished North Idaho resiliency.
For now, it's important to enjoy every minute of fall beauty that remains, and that's what I plan to do today.
Happy Tuesday.
