Ireland, 2023, Day Four: On to Killala

We stayed the night in our second new accommodation for our Irish travels.

Ross Beach Family Farmhouse is about two miles from Killala on the west coast in County Mayo, Ireland.

We have lovely accommodations in what looks like a brand-spanking new Bed and Breakfast.

It's not.

Seamus, Marcella and their three children have been hosting visitors for about two years on what was once a dairy farm owned by Seamus's family.

Nowadays, he raises suckling beef calves, selling them after nine months of nursing on their moms.

As noted, the place looks new.  It's modernity with lots of plug-ins and meticulous planning offers quite a contrast to the Edwardian B and B where we stayed in Dundalk a few nights ago.

That's the fun of planning a trip:  an interesting taste of different lodging experiences.

Killala is a fairly small town which wraps up by early evening.  Last night only one restaurant was open, but that didn't minimize our experience in the least.

After we had sat down for a while and were waiting for our server, a lady at the table next to us looked our way and said the Guinness was good.

The conversation starter led to a fascinating evening of enjoying our dinner and learning about Sheila and Helen, who are in Ireland from Tasmania.  Sheila, who's Irish and a retired nurse, came back home for her 50th class reunion.

Meanwhile, her friend Helen, a native of Tasmania, spent her career as an educator, including some fascinating years teaching deaf students.

Lots of give and take during the meal between tables and, as always, the visiting led to a new friendship.

It was a pleasant way to end a day which had been spent on the road, making stops at a restaurant with great soup and chowder near a trout and salmon stream and, later,  in Donegal Town where we walked around and visited the local Church of Ireland and looked through a few stores.

Our route here to Killala also took us past a stretch of ocean where it was easy to see why it's a venue for national surfing contests. We drove through Ballina, the other town in Ireland where President Joe Biden visited earlier this year and met with some of his cousins.

Today we'll move on to Clifden where we'll reunite with John and Sue at the Sharamore House and where Bill will be in Heaven tomorrow morning as he digs in to Sue's homemade pancakes.

And, so a little of the old and the new and the familiar---all blending together for our kind of trip.

So far, so good, and loving every minute.

Happy Tuesday.

Love the pictures! Keep them coming.
Loved the "no wi-fi" sign!
Isn't that quite a bit of butter on that piece of bread? Looks like great bread, though! It was probably on the plate of a neighboring customer.
