Wednesday Miscellany

It was a "wear your gloves" day as ice crystals coated gate chains and fence posts and milk weed, etc.

Today, we have rain, so I'm guessing the temperature has risen.

According to the weather report, the next ten days are supposed to be dry.

That will be nice for those of us who want to get out and do some late-fall hiking or more yard work.

I think I'll be given permission to resume my life when I go for the last post-cataract surgery appointment today.

I'm ready.

And, yes, Helen, I'll be wearing protective glasses.

And, Helen, Happy Birthday.

I hope you have a wonderful day celebrating your special day.

This day also marks a monumental and sad memory for folks of my age.

Sixty years ago today, my friend Barbara Kitt (Parsons) and I were standing at a mimeograph machine in Imogene Davis's business classroom.

We were running off copies of the Knothole, a high school paper specifically for the juniors in the journalism class.

Seniors were in charge of the Cedar Post, the official school paper which was published at the Sandpoint News Bulletin office.

As we worked through our project, Mrs. Davis left the room for a moment and then came back to announce that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, Tex.  At the time, he was still alive but died soon after the announcements all around the country and the world.

Like so many my age, I acquired an interest in politics as a seventh grader when Kennedy began his quest for the Presidency. I admired him beyond measure and listened intently to him every time he spoke.

When he did win the Presidency and was inaugurated, I remember my mother (who also admired him) meeting me at the door to our house, telling me about his inspiring Inaugural speech, which included the words "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

Seemed to me like a pretty good standard to follow throughout life.

Later, during his Presidency, I loved watching TV in the afternoons and admiring this man even more, with his quick wit and intelligence, when he would hold his press conferences.

When the flame from that inspiration and admiration was suddenly snuffed out by an assassin, I couldn't contain my emotions.

The rest of the day seemed sadly surreal as we went back to our classrooms and soon heard the announcement that buses would come and school would close.

I remember the anger I felt hearing some students running through the halls to the buses, expressing a sense of glee that the President had been killed.

Even back then, people could be mean.

Our family, like so many across America, remained transfixed to our television screens for several days thereafter.

On Sunday, after the assassination, once again I remember coming home from Mass and Mother (who stayed home to take care of our baby brother) telling us of the horror she had watched when Jack Ruby stepped into the television screen and shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin.

Strange times and strange theories evolved from these incidents.

60 years.  Hard to believe.

I still wonder how the course of history may have been different if this horrific event had not happened.

Ma and Pa Love woke up proud this morning when we saw that Coach Will Love's girls' varsity basketball started off their season on a high note and a great win.

Sandpoint freshman Brecken Mire sinks a deep two-point shot over Bonners Ferry's Brooke Petesch during the Bulldogs 66-47 win over the Badgers on Tuesday night.
