All in a Day

Aliya Strock

~~~~~
The fog out there is as thick as ever this morning.
What a waste a dry, warm day seemed to be yesterday with ubiquitous fog blocking both the sky and the sun!
It seemed like a waste, but in spite of its persistence, the fog did not dampen my day.
Almost every hour was filled with sharing of hometown tales, smiling faces, interesting people, fun picture taking and another victory for Willie's basketball team.
So no complaints, although it would be nice to see the sun.  We tend to forget what it looks like sometimes here in North Idaho.
When I saw Jeralyn at the basketball game with her granddaughter, I had to remind her of the first few times I ever saw her.
Those were Sunday mornings at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.  The Lewises had moved to Sandpoint and had established the Pend Oreille Veterinary Hospital.
At the time, Jeralyn was about the same age as her granddaughter, pictured above.  Dare I say she'll be 60 this year?
Back at that time, Jeralyn would spend some of her church time leaving the pew, walking the aisle and looking up at the choir.
Nobody seemed to mind because even "way back when" she had that bubbly, happy and engaging expression, which has remained the main reason that everyone loves Jeralyn.
I always relish my good fortune of having her as a high school student for three years and as a friend for lifetime.
These days, she counsels students at Sandpoint High School, pointing them toward their future.
And, she's a grandma.
Below, the Love's and the outlaws also recently named the "Sandpoint Rogues."
When SHS varsity girls games begin, I always know to expect some commentary from my older brother Mike and my daughter Annie.
They are regulars on the high school sports channel where they can watch the games streamed.
One post during our time spent at the Lakeland-Sandpoint game read:  the Love's have arrived.
That came from Annie.
Last night, I saw a post from Mike wondering if anyone else was watching the game.  So, I asked a young lady to take a picture of our group which sits behind the players.
She did, and then I sent it to via group chat to Mike and Annie (who had been noticeably silent).
Mike couldn't resist doing a little doctoring on the photo; hence, the Sandpoint Rogues.
We had a great time visiting and trying not to live up to our newly coined name.  I prefer outlaws!
A good time was had by all, especially when the girls won the game.
Two outlaws and siblings:  Chris and Kirsten Thompson. BTW: they are "outlaws" cuz they're not really in-laws but members of the extended family.
A couple of ladies of Northside School fame:  Jayne and Nancy.  I had their daughters as students.
Jayne taught while Nancy ran the school as the office secretary.
Great ladies and great seeing them at the game.
Below:  Joe, one of the dedicated assistant coaches for the SHS girls varsity and head coach for the junior varsity.
Mandy Evans manages the Better Together Animal Alliance in Sandpoint, and she's one of Debbie's contemporaries and friends who attended last night's game.
Below:  Abby, a Kootenai School educator and her husband visiting during the game. Mandy's a basketball mom.  Her son plays on the SHS boys varsity team.
Below:  this is the same young lady who is spinning the basketball in the top photo.
Aliya Strock has endured bad luck this season.  She's a stand-out on Willie's team, but she suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Aliya, an SHS senior,  has handled the setback with impressive and amazing grace. Plus, she helps the coaches on the bench during games.
Wishing Aliya the very best of healing as she has surgery on her knee this week.
An amazing student and athlete and nice person.
We are getting new powerlines, compliments of our electric provider Northern Lights, Inc.
Yesterday, the installation crew came around and prepared the poles for the new wire.
That meant a brief electrical outage and a wonderful and fun visit with Mark Hull, a longtime lineman for the electric cooperative.
I had never really talked to Mark before, but by the time the crew was wrapping up their work, I knew that I'd spent time with an individual rich with local lore.
It was a fun visit, and I now know how to trap a bear.
And, it's another Game Day for the ZAGS!
Tonight they take on Loyola Marymount in the Kennel.
Tip-off is at 8 p.m. PST on ESPN.
GO, ZAGS!!!
And, GO SANDPOINT BULLDOGS, as you finish your regular season in Moscow, tipping off against the Bears at 7 p.m.
