Passing the Sniff Test, Etc.

I met this delightful new canine friend yesterday.

Lucy is a playful gal who loves people.

She seemed very happy to welcome me into her home.  We even spent some time getting better acquainted while I petted her.

Then, I went home and paid the price.

Two dogs attached their noses to my legs, almost as if their nostrils were coated with velcro.

Instead of a pat down or a frisk, I got the complete smell down, which lasted a couple of minutes.

It was so intense, I could barely walk through the kitchen area with my legs stuck to two inquisitive, suspicious dogs.

I've gone through this "checkin' on Mom" routine several times this week because of visits over to my sisters to see Callie Pup.

I guess it's a good thing that Foster and Bridie limit their reaction to the scent of another dog to their nostril activity.

Hard to imagine what it would be like if people did the same thing when members of their family came home from associating with other humans.

Anyway, the visit with Lucy yesterday turned out to be my big escape from the house during a rainy, ugly day. The rain persisted all day and all night.

It continues to fall this morning and to say it's gloomy outside would be an understatement.

And, so now has come the time of the year when people who have the means and the right situation start posting pictures of beautiful and enchanting paradises where the sun is shining and they are outside in shorts and sandals lounging and napping and soaking up sunshine.

Along with the viewing of those scenes comes my desire to drop everything I'm doing, buy an airline ticket and join them.

I can remember past years when, at this time or in February, we have happily escaped the winter ughs.

Most recently, Bill and I went to San Diego and watched the ZAGS play and walked outside in shirt sleeves on solid, level ground.  It was a Heavenly getaway, but that was before the Pandemic. So, it's been a while.

Other times, we've gone to Arizona.  One time, we even packed up our bikes and drove there to watch spring training and to enjoy some desert life.

Some years, my sisters and I have gone to Scottsdale, where there's a fancy Arabian show.

Yes, every time we've escaped during this depressing time of the year, we have created some wonderful memories and, more importantly, we have managed to find a way to maintain our sanity.

Actually, this year really hasn't been that bad.

Nevertheless, I did announce to Bill yesterday that if the rain kept falling today like it did yesterday, I was likely to get a little grouchy.

And, when I'd lost all patience with being cooped up inside, I'd get in the car and go somewhere---somewhere that the gray and gloom looked just enough different from our Lovestead gloom that it would surely heighten my mood.

And, if there happened to be dogs wherever I went, I would come back home to be at the mercy of the nose inspectors.

I feel confident that the intensity of their kitchen inspections is fully related to the fact that THEY too cannot spend their usual time outside in this ugly weather, sniffing for all the critters that have invaded the place overnight.

Dogs get desperate and suffer from cabin fever just like their human friends.

There may be just a little hyperbole to the threat above, but we do feel that way sometimes when the rain and gray and gloom stay around far too long.

Fortunately, today, a couple of football play-off games will keep us fairly occupied.  And, I can check in on Facebook a time or two to scroll through the photos of people enjoying January paradises and dream.

And, tomorrow the rain is supposed to stop and we may even see the temperature soar to almost 50.

Happy Sunday.
