Saturday Slight

Thank you to my sister-in-law Joyce for posting the image above on Facebook.

I felt the message was especially timely this morning after reading a Facebook post yesterday from a former beloved student who was verbally assaulted when she stopped for an individual who was crossing the street.

That same individual saw her California license plate and yelled "Go home!"

My former student is in town for her father's funeral.

She is a graduate of Sandpoint High School. After graduation, she moved to California where she married and raised her family.

Here is a portion of her post:

"I'm NOT here to raise housing prices or take your jobs.

I know the reputation that out of state drivers have so I go out of my way to drive courteously—especially in town.

I AM here to bury my dad who passed this week and to support my mom as she adjusts to life without him.

Maybe take time to find out who someone is before making assumptions and acting rudely.

A little kindness goes a long way…"

The last time I checked, this post had 114 comments, and, happily, I have not read any snide or thoughtless responses.

I have, however, read about others receiving similar treatment in our community.

In fact, I know of another similar example, which happened a few years ago where my daughter who lives in Seattle and her friends were basically told in a drive by to go back where they came from.

Annie didn't have time to yell back that she was born at Bonner General in Sandpoint and graduated from Sandpoint High School.

Sadly, this behavior is happening all too often and, way too often, goes unchecked.

"We all came from somewhere," I like to say. I was born in Sandpoint, but my mother came here on the train from Chicago in 1945.

I also add that statement that "I don't care where people came from.  Just don't act like a jerk."

Seems like that guideline for human behavior fits just about anywhere and in any situation.

Let's all do better in teaching and modeling respect and good manners. It seems that such lessons need to be reinforced with every opportunity, regardless of one's age.

Finally, to my student and friend, I hope the reaction to your post that you have read softens the grief you are experiencing.

And, yes, you are correct; kindness goes a long way.

Turkeys and deer were out on spring flings around the countryside yesterday.

My friend Jennifer created the event below.

She also runs the Homewood Farm Stand over on Shingle Mill Road.  If you're driving around today, check it out.

This year's event is scheduled for next weekend at the Bonner County Fairgrounds.

From my past visits, I can attest that Funky Junk is worth visiting.
