Bill and I took off for a weekend getaway to Big Sky country yesterday. And when we came upon this rather impressive fly atop a gateway sign to Kootenai River County, we had to turn around and give it a closer look.
I don't know if Bill figures he can catch a whale if he can replicate this fly, but it could provide him a nice winter project for his fly-tying activities.
We drove along a stretch of HWY 2 where we hadn't been in about ten years. As always, it was beautiful with golden larch highlighting the landscape virtually everywhere.
The needles are disappearing fast, though. In fact, we walked through a larch needle shower while spending a few minutes along the shoreline of one of those crystal clear lakes between Libby and Kalispell. The shoreline is developing a rather substantial golden ring, thanks to the needles.
Today, Bill may take some of his "smaller" flies and try a little fishing in the streams around the area. We've enjoyed wonderful scenery, fabulous eats and some great visiting.
And, of course, it doesn't matter where we end up on this day---one seasonal thought will start dominating our minds as our favorite winter time diversion begins for another year: GO ZAGS!
Happy Saturday.
