Laura Schmid aka Swiss Miss |
She's baaaack! Yes, Swiss Miss is among us once again, and along with Laura, comes that quiet but quick and delightful sense of humor.
Laura, who is currently in her winter break from college, flew through Reyjkavik, Iceland, after taking off from Zurich. She spent 30 minutes in Iceland at the airport before catching her next flight to Seattle.
Last night when she came for the Zagfest at the Lovestead, I handed her a book Annie had given us after one of her trips to Europe last year when she spent 24 hours in Iceland.
Laura rides an Icelandic pony in Switzerland, so I knew she would enjoy the book, a hard cover focusing on Icelandic ponies in their natural surroundings.
She seemed to enjoy thumbing through the pages.
Later, Bill (fully knowing that Laura had only 30 minutes in the country) asked her if she saw anything that looked familiar in the book.
With no thought, she immediately opened to book to the totally black end sheets, pointed and said something to the effect of, "This was all I saw."
Pretty witty young lady, and we all love that about her.
Prior to the ZAGS game, I spent most of the day in the kitchen, baking bread and hamburger buns.
Later, I took a fresh, warm loaf over to the Young Love's home where Laura stays on her visits.
With a choice of waiting until French toast time (the bread makes THE best French toast) or immediate gobbling , Laura and Debbie opted for the latter---along with some margarine and jelly, of course.
We also went to the barn to meet the new faces on the block, including CB. The little guy loved his visitors and did a nice job showing off for them.
After coming home on a snowy, wet afternoon, I continued my domestic goddess Saturday by whipping up and baking a blueberry/raspberry cobbler with berries from our farm.
Turned out later that many of the items in our ZAG dinner last night were either homemade or they came from the neighborhood-----i.e. those Woods burgers.
And, of course, we all enjoyed the ZAGS game.
Twas close enough, but the Bulldogs came away with a solid victory. Plus, it was a great game for both teams, 'cept the score for San Francisco, of course.
And, so Swiss Miss has settled in for her winter visit, and January moves on. Today looks like it will be a lot nicer than yesterday, so that's fine with me.
As an aside: Laura's mom Caroline teaches at a high school in Switzerland. Every year she takes her students to Davos, site of this past week's World Economic Forum.
Laura said she hasn't heard too much about her mom's experience there except that she did get to listen to one of the most renowned voices in the world.
Betcha can't guess who??????
Scroll down!
Yes, Caroline had the great opportunity to listen to Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.
I'm jealous.
Also, check out the link below about one of our regional heroes who helps us make it through the winter while eating too much food.
Since I'm being lazy this morning and since the ZAGS are now 19-4 in coach Mark Few's 19th season as their coach, I hope you will enjoy the story.
It fits perfectly as Reason No. 194 in the "Why We Love the ZAGS" category.
