Indeed, CB and his friends were very happy this morning.
They had spent a night, once again going in and out of their barn stalls AND they got to go to a new pasture this morning.
Hay's off the field, and there's lots of green grass left for them to munch on. Plus, the the field is about three times the size of the two pastures where they've been alternating since May.
So, thanks to Bill's efforts this week, our barn surface is completely safe throughout.
Gravel topped by sturdy rubber mats. No more boards to rot.
And, the summer routine of horses coming in and going out as they please during their nights in the barnyard is back in force.
We had a busy day yesterday, tending to fence around the hay field. We really do need to get someone to put in real fence wire as opposed to the thin electric wire, but for now, everything's patched up and extensive flagging in key areas should keep the horses safe and where they belong.
After the fence project, Bill finished the stall, and I mowed the lawn. Both were dirty jobs. In the midst of those projects, our friend Dennis Warren from Red Owl Construction brought us a load of beautiful stuff in his big green dump truck.
Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and on a farm a brand new pile of three quarter minus gravel is definitely sheer beauty.
Bill used one bucketful with the tractor to finish off the stall surface, and, for sure, we'll find plenty of uses for dipping out of that pile as fall, winter and spring come.
We used the last load for about three years, so we're feeling pretty relieved having a brand new supply.
Anyway, that gravel is just as pretty to us as all those petunias from the downtown flower pots in the photos below. Wish I could grow petunias like that.
I am happy with my cucumbers, though. Picked another four from the garden yesterday. And, the manure-pile spud garden is looking great this year.
Seeing some red potato skin sticking up through the dirt while watering yesterday morning, I dug in with my fingers and pulled out a big fat spud about 4-5 inches long.
And, this is early August. I'm thinking that spot will yield some good looking bakers by September and a good supply on top of that.
Bill told me when he saw the big spud that those are "Make America Great Again" potatoes.
I retorted, "No, they're still called 'Depression potatoes,' as Bill usually calls them, because we've got to have good supply handy when Putin takes over!"
That damn Trump has started infiltrate every aspect of our lives, it seems.
Oops, it's a Happy Day, so I'd better get back on track. We have cooler weather, and we'll probably do something fun today. The urgent work is done----for a day or two anyway.
Don't forget to watch or record the NFL Hall of Fame show on ESPN where Sandpoint's Jerry Kramer is inducted---today beginning at 4 p.m. PDT, lasting until 7:30 p.m. PDT.
Happy Saturday.
