It's the first of June, 2019, and there's been a first at the Lovestead this morning.
The horses are grazing on tall grass which would usually be harvested as their winter hay.
After learning over the winter that we could not count on our field being harvested, I realized that some changes were coming.
This year, hay will be delivered in a couple of large stacks, and I'll hire some big, strong young men to move the bales to the barn.
The change also meant much more pasture than usual.
My dear husband has been working for the past couple of weeks putting up more substantial fencing on the west side of the hay field AND yesterday he sprayed for weeds around the shelter shed for the field.
He also closed gates to the far pasture and to the woods.
So, this morning my horses are figuring they have walked down the lane to Heaven.
Tall grass with tasty tassles will keep their lips and teeth busy for a couple of hours.
Then, I'll walk them back to the barnyard.
It may be horse heaven for Lily, Lefty and CB, but it also means a whole lot more steps on the Fitbit for me.
That's a good thing.
This morning's early introduction to the hay field not only made the horses happy but also provided another stunning reminder of why I still love horses even though I don't ride as much as I did in the past.
They are SO beautiful and to see them in all their blissful glory, strolling through the grass and snipping off tassles in a beautiful pasture---it's just one of magnificent images of this time of year.
Special thanks to Bill for all the hours he devoted to having the pasture ready for this day.
Since it's Saturday and I want to be lazy, I'll send you to another blog published this week by my friend Connie, whose husband, like Bill, is a truly committed woodsman.
The Burkharts live in Hope, and, their interests and appreciation for the simple but fruitful country life are evident in Connie's postings.
Enjoy the photos below and enjoy Connie's take on life here in North Idaho.
