Twas a busy and fun day yesterday, even if the rain rarely
stopped.
Selle Club and Sandpoint High
School girls varsity provided ample doses of indoor sunshine and tasty food during a noontime luncheon and an “oh,
so sweet win” at an evening season opener.
I enjoyed reconnecting with the ladies of the Selle Club
after several years absence. That event
included some catch up with some familiar faces in the group and getting acquainted with some
new friends.
Selle Club has functioned as an organization for about 80
years, along with several other home-extension groups around the county.
Some of the original basics for the club may have changed
a bit, but many, like good food, good fellowship and service still thrive today.
Dues and donations for the Christmas fund go along with the
usual business---sunshine club news about ailing members or those celebrating a
birthday and decisions on where best to steer their service efforts.
There’s usually a
potluck luncheon, dessert gathering or a
restaurant lunch get-together. It’s customary
for members to form a circle, join hands and sing a well-known hymn prior to
eating and visiting.
Sometimes, the group gets together to work on crafts.
Sometimes a guest speaker highlights a meeting.
It’s a simple, consistent and positive approach to social
interaction and humanitarian causes
which seems to have worked well over the years.
And so, when I showed up at Sharon Yaw Roget’s home for
yesterday’s luncheon, I entered with a
sense of comfort and the knowledge that this would, as always, be a warm and
friendly gathering.
Later in the day, my daughter-in-law Debbie picked me up,
and we headed to Les Rogers Gym at Sandpoint High School.
Again, it was a familiar setting for me with some
predictable activities---saying hi to former colleagues, visiting with parents
of this year’s teams and keeping an adoring eye on Willie as he interacted with
referees, the visiting coach, his own staff and his players.
Again, it was a setting with a blend of familiar and new
faces, especially on the team and in the parent section. I soon learned from my golf pro friend Mike
DePrez that this year it’s important to “put
in the golfers.”
I acknowledged his instructions but gave no
promises that I had any influences over Coach Love.
Sandpoint’s junior varsity and varsity both sailed to smooth
and sweet victories in their season openers. Both contests reflected confidence, teamwork, poise and improved skills.
Of course, while watching the local Bulldogs, Debbie and I kept track of the ZAGS on our cell phones.
Overall, a great night to be Bulldog players in both Sandpoint or Spokane. Looks like some
fun times ahead for fans, parrents, coaches and players.
By the time, Debbie and I left the gym, the rain had
stopped.
Dark rain clouds and gloom may
have been hanging around all day, but their influence had little impact other than
wetting the earth.
And, from what I’ve
been told by my farmer friend and
neighbor, Dan Wood, that was a good thing too. Just days ago while disking a field, he was still working up some dust.
Rejoining the Selle Club and the knowledge that our son’s
team has some exciting potential for this season signal some good times ahead.
Indeed, it was a very good day to live in Selle and to be a
Bulldog fan/proud mom.
Happy Wednesday.
Enjoy the photos.
