Saturday Potpourri

We did escape yesterday, even though it was a gorgeous day when no escape was needed.

We knew, however, that more shoveling, plowing, blowing is to come.

At times, even on the most beautious of winter days, a diversion can be therapeutic.

As we reached our row with our popcorn, directly in front of my sisters and Roxzene with their popcorn, the previews came on quickly.

What was the first preview?

A screenful of snow!  In Alaska!

Yeah, sure, nice diversion.

Well, the Harrison Ford movie preview of a movie about a dog named Buck didn't last long, so for the next two hours we did not see snow nor talk about snow.

We were riveted and remained so until we walked out of the theater back into the snow and ice.

Our Friday escape took us to the Bonner Mall Cinema to see the movie 1917, which has just received 10 Academy Award nominations.

We traveled vicariously to a time more than 100 years ago in France where, because of communications lines being destroyed, two British soldiers were sent to hand deliver a message warning another British unit not to attack.

The enemy had withdrawn strategically to lure the soldiers into a trap.

That's basically the story in this movie, shot last year in Scotland and England.

In this movie, viewers will see the reality of war and a supreme example of commitment to a vital cause along with loyalty and respect for a fallen comrade.

We all agreed that the movie is intense and well done.

And, so today, the snow is falling again, supposedly continuing throughout the day.

We'll be back at the grind and will, no doubt, watch a few basketball games, including the big one tonight at 7 p.m. when the ZAGS host the often prickly Cougars from BYU.

It should be a great contest and another great test to show just how good the ZAGS are this year.

Hoping for another positive outcome.

Willie and his SHS girls varsity basketball team had a positive outcome yesterday when they took on Lakeland, winning by a dozen points.

Congrats, Willie, assistants and players.  A great start for league action.

On another topic, I saw this photo of a younger Marlo this morning on Facebook.  She was 5 at the time.

Since that time, sweet and talented Marlo has become a good friend of our CB, whom she helped name.

She's now 9, much taller but still committed and proud to share the optimism of Martin Luther King, Jr., whose inspiration we celebrate during this holiday weekend.

Considering that some of King's words are so simply expressed, it's ironic that some find them so difficult to follow.

Since "hope" has not yet been stamped out in our culture, remembering King's words (like those below) from time to time can be both uplifting and motivating.

We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.

Happy Saturday.

Enjoy your time today. Remain hopeful.

And, of course, GO, ZAGS!
