Just Putzin' Along

When you're just putzin' along, day after day, enjoying your little piece of the world, reporting on the slices of life  that mean so much to you could get a bit redundant.

As one who thrives on new experiences, I hate to be redundant.

But that's kinda how it is right now.

The garden is coming alive, the flower show of colors aplenty continues and the grass keeps growing.

Probably the biggest headlines here at the Lovestead this morning involve my disappointment so far with this year's asparagus crop and my excited anticipation of the first of my Pietsch irises bursting open with color.

White iris blooms have been ubiquitous around the place for the past week or so, but when the Pietsch irises start breaking out, one of the best flower shows of the season begins.

One day, nearly 16 years ago, Carol and Gary Pietsch came to our new place with a bag of Iris starts.

We sat on the deck, enjoyed the front yard view, and Carol shared with me a little history of some of those bulbs.

Do I remember it now?  Heck, no.

I just know they reflect a portion of Carol's family history, certainly including her mom,  the famous chili and cinnamon roll cook at Sandpoint High School.

Well, every year since that visit, when those great big irises start popping out in their unique colors, I think of Carol and Gary and that pleasant experience on our front deck.

I'm guessing the first of the irises may open in the next day or so, and, of course, I'll take a picture.

I really don't know what to think about the asparagus, which has yielded so many tasty dinner treats over the years.

We've eaten asparagus just once, and the sorry looking skinny and twisted spears I've picked since then may not even make it to the pyrex baking pan.

Too few, too strange looking.

Maybe if it ever warms up for an extended period of time, the crop will get better.  Maybe not.

In the meantime, there's lots of hope involved out there in the garden dirt where corn is growing and cucumbers didn't even mind the transplant.

Tomatoes look like they may have taken a pause in their growth, but I have no doubt they'll take off.

So there's the "putzing along" headlines: nothing startling, nothing unique, just days filled with thousands of little images of why this time of year is so redundant in a lovely and often nostalgic way.

Happy Thursday.

A few Thursday Throwbacks . . . .

A good asparagus year
