Around Donegal

Ancestors on my mother's side of the family came from Donegal.  In doing research, I learned that the town of Buncrana is the general area where they lived.

We've been to Buncrana and County Donegal four times now, and each time we find it even more beautiful.

We stay at the Seaview Tavern B and B a few miles from Buncrana. It is part of a family owned business, including a store, restaurant, pub and new beer garden.  It sits on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Bill and I have enjoyed getting to know the Doherty family and we marvel at the efficiency and skill with which they run this busy establishment.  Plus, we don't mind the views out the windows.

Yesterday we left our B and B and set off to see a series of places around the area.

We visited the tower which marks Malin Head itself---northernmost point of the Republic of Ireland. The magnificence of the views from both the tower and surrounding trails is breath-taking.

We munched from stop to stop (and today I'm paying the price).  We walked an ocean beach and picked up rocks and shells.

We drove a beautiful valley near Buncrana and enjoyed endless views of sheep in beautifully manicured farms.

We also went to see the "Amazing Grace" monument and signage at Buncrana.  "Amazing Grace" by John Newton was inspired by a bad experience in a storm off the waters of Buncrana.  Sadly, the display was fenced off for a music festival happening this weekend.

We also walked in the beautiful park where, by chance, we met the major Nicholas Crosson.

We met him because some ladies were asking me about family names in my ancestry hailing from Buncrana. When I mentioned Crosson, the mayor just happened to be walking by with his dog Molly.

We don't know if we are related, but it sure was fun spending some time visiting with him---a very approachable guy who now presides over all the municipal councillors in Ireland.

Twas another fun day filled with ample eye candy and too much of the edible kind, at least for my tummy.

We soldier on, though, and the plan is to spend some time in Northern Ireland today.

Hope you enjoy the photos of this beautiful part of Ireland.
