Sunday Miscellany

It's a quiet Sunday morning here at the Lovestead.

I was disappointed to learn that the Seattle-Tampa Bay NFL game in Munich, Germany is not available on any of the TV channels we have.

Dang!

I'm loving the Seahawks this year and the phenomenal story their "new-old" quarterback Gino Smith is creating game after game.

I still love Russell Wilson but also enjoy underdog stories. Gino and the Seahawks have surpassed all pre-season expectations, and the team is fun to watch.

Hoping they keep the winning streak going in Germany.

In other sports news, Bill and Willie went to the Gonzaga women's basketball blow-out yesterday afternoon at The Kennel.

This morning, Bill reported about a nice conversation he had with one of the Gonzaga super fans named Lynn who lives in our general neighborhood.

Bill first met Lynn about 20 years ago when he did a forestry plan for him and his late wife Martha aka ZAgranny.

I met the couple in 2016 after my friend Kim, the Yoke's pharmacist, told me about them and their unbelievable devotion to the ZAGS.

Later, I included them in a story for "Sandpoint Magazine" called ZAGmania.  An excerpt:

Colorado transplants Lynn and Marcy Wise, avid followers of both GU men and women’s basketball teams, credit the coaching staffs.

“They don’t cheat,” Marcy Wise said. “The program is run well. They recruit good people and make good men and women out of them.”

Marcy Wise wears Zags gear “24-7” and happily gets distracted talking about her favorite team. Once the season starts, she spends the bulk of her days posting on the Gonzaga University message boards as “ZAG Grannie.”

“I usually start with Craziness in the Kennel,” she said. “I carry that all through the season, posting lots of pictures and comments, and starting separate threads for Vegas and the NCAA tourney games.”

The couple manages to attend 12 to 14 games a year, thanks to their membership in the Bulldog Club. A $250 donation enables members to purchase whatever extra tickets are available after students, staff and season ticket holders’ seats are guaranteed. Sometimes opposing teams do not use their allotment, opening up the extras.

It's nice to know that Lynn is still attending the games, and I know Bill enjoyed visiting with him.

Twas a great weekend to be a ZAG with both the men's and women's teams winning their games.

Added to that, the Nevada incumbent Senator whose victory would ensure that Democrats could continue controlling the U.S. Senate won her race.

Sen. Catherine CortezMasto is a Gonzaga School of Law graduate.

On another topic, for those who would enjoy a helping or two of Norman Rockwell nostalgia, today's Bonner County Daily Bee has two articles which provide an ample supply.

In one piece, we learn from those who lived it some wonderful tidbits of history about the Pine Street Hill, Sandpoint's first ski area and soon to be a preserved in perpetuity as a sledding hill for the public.

The next piece is written by one of my favorite local writers, Tim H. Henney.

The column deals poignantly with the not exactly gold aspects of the "golden years," where physical, mental and emotional elements often collaborate to see that we don't always feel great.

Nonetheless, Tim's latest contribution overflows with "feel good" and many reasons to appreciate "our town" and some of its unsung medical heroes.

It's an amazingly wonderful and upbeat piece.

Enjoy, and Happy Sunday.
