I'm really glad this morning that I have a big nose.
Mother used to say, in defense of her adequate nose, that you're a purebred if you have a big nose.
I don't know where she heard or read that line, but it seemed like a good rationale for whenever we looked in the mirror.
Well, this purebred old goat led with her big nose this morning while doing the "forward angel drop."
No, I wasn't trying to make snow angels. I tripped over a cord---either the rope to the sled or the extension cord running to the water tank, which had been strung along the fence.
I always put it there at night so it can be found with each new snow dump.
In the mornings, I have to move the cord from the fence while leading the horses into the barnyard.
So, with my sled full of hay, I was in the midst of doing that task when I suddenly went down and jammed that big nose right into the snow.
Said a couple of bad words too!
The usual exercise "after the fall" for folks my age is to lie there and assess the bodily damage.
Not a good idea this morning in this frigid weather with snow blowing all around.
So, I skipped that step, cleaned all the snow out of my face, checked on my nose and then pondered just how I was gonna get back up.
Again, "at this age," that does take some careful planning. Ask my friend Helen who leaned too far into a garbage can!
Fortunately, a man came along and found her.
Fortunately, for me, and for the first time ever this winter, I was glad to see a snowbank nearby.
Yes, I can roll over there, dig in and push myself up.
By golly, it only took one try, and the abominable snow person was standing up, brushing off a layer of white stuff from head to toe.
Body parts did still move.
So, I finished moving the extension cord and made my way out to the shelter with the horses' hay, all the time wondering what my "purebred" nose would look like the next time I checked in the mirror.
Later, I did so---without my glasses---cuz everything looks better "at this age" when you don't have your specs on.
So far, so good on the morning catastrophe, and, I will say once again "Baby, it's cold outside."
For those who don't know and those who care, we're in for some brutal subzero cold the next couple of days.
The good thing about mini blizzards in the brutal cold is that the snow is light. Furthermore, the best thing is that here at our house the snow is blowing around rather than getting too deep for walking.
One looks for the silver linings, so when snow just keeps coming, light and fluffy will do, thank you.
And, so, yes, it's frightful out there but so delightful when you want to admire your Christmas lights and your newly decorated tree.
Bill moved it to the deck yesterday and set it up in its stand.
Later, I attached the lights and, in installments (cuz of the frigid air outside) placed our family set of ornaments on its branches.
In the dark, the tree is a glorious sight.
We won't put presents under it. In fact, I don't know what we'll do with presents other than everyone bringing theirs and putting them in a pile on the kitchen island or dining room table.
If we did as usual, we have a dog named Bridie who would be in Heaven with all that stuff to get into. Much more fun than pot holders, toilet paper, socks or underwear pilfered from various parts of the house.
And, so we'll bypass the "under the tree" rule for presents, and I'm sure everyone will be fine.
In the midst of frightful and delightful, my new passport came yesterday which made my spirits bright.
"I can go to Canada," I texted to Bill and Annie. I doubt they thought that was too impressive because why would Marianne want to go to Canada when it's probably a lot colder and more miserable up there.
For me, it was "just cuz."
After all, it's nice to know that one has the official license for ten more years of foreign travel. Plus, it inspires me to spend less time doing nose plants and more time taking care of my body so I can take those trips.
And, that's all.
Now, I think I'll go check my nose with my glasses on.
Happy Tuesday, and enjoy the ZAGS game.
No. 11 Gonzaga takes on the Montana Grizzlies in the Kennel tonight at 6 p.m. PST on Root/KHQ.
