Yesterday may have been one of those "it's a wonderful life" days.
It was pretty breezy all day, and the wind did create a mess on the lawn scattering branches and dry leaves every direction. In fact, I almost got speared by one brittle branch from above while picking up another.
Nonetheless, twas a day filled with beautiful sounds of melodic chimes, some leisurely fun, a bit of light work, a couple of impish horses, three happy dogs, gardening tasties sublime, and a host of summer sights to behold.
The wildflower section of my garden spot is now in bloom, and, at the other end, sunflowers, daisies and an orange cosmos have popped open.
I picked my first two cucumbers yesterday. Although I had Googled how to freeze cherry tomatoes, I may not go that route.
A pasta salad filled with Sun Gold mini maters and fresh garden cucumbers turned out so tasty that it almost did not need any dressing. I did add a touch of Italian. The salad served as supper for me. Bill told me later when he came home from fishing that it did the same for him.
I have a feeling that pasta salads will be enjoyed frequently around here as long as those little tomatoes are ripening.
The first batch of green beans went into the freezer yesterday. The crop is not plentiful, simply because I did not plant enough seed.
So, I went to North 40 for another batch to plant for the second half of the summer.
Turns out all they had left was yellow beans, so I brought home some packets and have put one into the ground. We should have enough warm weather for them to mature before it freezes. I'll probably also give another round of lettuce a try.
After Bill headed for Upper Pack River, I took the 4-wheeler to the hay field to search for one missing fly mask. The horses were all standing around the gate, and my horses are never in a hurry to get out of the way.
Slowly, carefully, I drove the 4-wheeler through the gate with CB sniffing all along. Concentrating so much on CB caused a void in my brain. Once I'd gotten through the gate and it swung shut, I simply moved on.
Big mistake.
Lefty knows an unlatched gate when he sees it. I turned around in time to see Lily out in the pasture but no sign of Lefty and CB.
Of course, they'd gone through the gate, but, happily not too far cuz there was some green grass just a few feet away.
Grain, however, trumps grass, and it didn't take too long to lure them back into their pasture.
I decided to avoid driving around the pasture and, instead, took a spin through the woods, which is beautiful with huge patches of tall, lush grass.
Tony took the tractor to his shop yesterday and said it would be back this week, which leads to some more good times with brush-hogging trails through the woods.
After dinner, all three dogs and I took another little drive in the car around the neighborhood where some hay fields are now bare from harvest while others are in wind-row mode.
Fortunately, farmers are getting their hay in without too many weather challenges.
Unlike most years, the weather has cooperated for our gardening and harvesting needs.
The garden produce tastes good in the kitchen, and the hay will taste good for the animals when winter comes.
Yup, it was a pretty wonderful life all day yesterday.
Today is looking promising too.
Happy Tuesday.
