We had beautiful skies last night but not for good reasons.
Forest-fire smoke was drifting through the air. We knew of at least one source: a fire near Athol, which is 25 miles south of Sandpoint. The fire caused the evacuation of the little community.
Fortunately, the 60-acre blaze was soon contained, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
This morning our vehicles had a light film of ash from drifting smoke.
We're halfway through this week's brutal heat blast, and, happily, cloudy skies might spare us some of the misery.
Bill worked off and on all day in yesterday's heat, constructing a new mailbox stand.
He has the stand in place and will add the mailbox this morning with a note to the deliverer asking if it's satisfactory.
Once he receives that response, he'll do whatever's needed to make it a permanent structure.
Twas a fun lunch with my friends Chris and Becky yesterday at Two Tones in Bonners Ferry. It was especially fun that the two had the opportunity to get acquainted.
Later in the day, I sent a note to the pumpkin superintendent at the Bonner County Fair, asking if my pumpkin won a ribbon.
"It won a blue ribbon for the biggest pumpkin," she wrote.
I did set that goal back in May while putting two seeds in the top of the manure pile.
So, it was a good feeling to learn the judging results and to pass them on to my friend Garry Bristow, whom I wanted to honor with the pumpkin.
I hope the news brought a smile to his face and a desire to get down to the fair to see the pumpkin.
I smiled yesterday while reading a text from my sister Laurie. CB has been a good student during the first few days over at the Colburn place.
Standing still while being brushed and walking and standing at the mounting block and responding well to whatever cues Laurie gives him while being ridden.
I'm so thankful that he's had this opportunity for a refresher course.
Tomorrow Annie comes home for four days, so today will be devoted to grocery shopping and tidying up for her visit.
Could be Annie and I will both take a ride on CB while she's here.
And, so the beat and the heat go on. So far, we're hanging in there.
Happy Wednesday.
