It was a "git 'er done" day yesterday.
Only problem was that by afternoon I couldn't figure out where I put the "to do" list I had scrawled on a piece of paper in the early morning.
So, I don't really think I got all of 'er done but did make progress.
The big item took a couple of hours: red plum jelly.
Fourteen jars, so Tom Tharp can be happy that my "supply side, keep-fill" service is looking even better.
It's such pretty jelly and tasty with a nice zing too.
Another item I did remember on the list was to go pull some Marestail (pictured below).
I am so mad that the wicked weed is taking over our pastures and anywhere else its millions of seeds care to blow.
We had the place sprayed for weeds in May, but Marestail, an annual, doesn't show up until about July.
I first saw it on our place two years ago when we had such an extremely dry summer.
Just a few clumps showed up out in Pasture No. 2. I had never seen this weed before.
We reasoned and pretty much rationalized that the dryness had encouraged its growth but didn't worry too much about it.
Well, I wish we would have pulled all those originals cuz the dang obnoxious weed is spreading much too quickly.
I pulled a few clumps yesterday and put them in a plastic bag for burning later.
The reading I've done on the annual stubborn and prolific weed is that it is resistant to the popular weed sprays.
After pulling those few clumps, I decided to quit because to try to pull all of it would have taken the rest of the day and probably more time.
I hope there are some weed wizards out there who have suggestions because I do not want to see a dramatic spread of its existence next summer.
I also got off track a bit yesterday after receiving a book in the mail from the lovely lady who lives in the Douglas Mansion in Michigan where my mother lived for a time as a child.
In a notecard, she threw out a couple of questions about family members which launched me into action, trying to learn more of the pieces in our family history.
Happy to report this morning that, once again through the magic of the Internet, I've made a connection with a long lost cousin who may be able to put me on to some more family sources.
I love ancestry and in our family's case, there are lots of gaps to fill.
Foster and I took an afternoon drive around some of the area neighborhoods, and the essence of fall was beginning to appear albeit in mere hints---ripe apples, slowly turning leaves and a sense of quiet, knowing that so many country kids were off at school.
I did see my first school bus, bringing kids home from school, and this morning I watched our local bus go by. The district has purchased a brand spankin' new bus for this route.
If I can find that "to do" list from yesterday, I'll try to check off the rest of it today.
Even if some stuff remained undone, yesterday was a productive, fun and even somewhat relaxing day.
Happy Wednesday.
