It was planned as an escape.
By crossing the Canadian Border, we would be in another country, free from the 24-7 insanity of the United States of America.
Or so, we thought.
Once into Canada, where Border security hasn't changed a bit, Bill turned the radio to a national station which was featuring call-ins from around Canada and the United States.
We soon realized that there would be no escaping as long as that radio was on. Nevertheless, we were also curious to hear what Canadians and callers from our country had to say about the notion that the proud nation of Canada should become the 51st state in the USA.
In more than an hour's worth of call-in's, we heard two Canadians who thought Canadian statehood might be a good idea.
One thought so because he can't find a family doctor in Canada. Hmm!
The other caller mentioned something about Canadian citizens being able to go to the U.S. to work while, in his mind, it was not reciprocal for U.S. citizens to work in Canada.
The moderator disagreed with his contention and suggested that the caller do some research.
Also, a lady from New Orleans thought it was a good idea because this is what Donald Trump does, and she supports him.
The rest of the calls were universally and adamantly opposed to Canada becoming the 51st state.
Each call was thoughtful and unique in its own right, offering what seemed like obvious reasons that Canada ought to remain Canada.
After listening to the radio show, I'll add one more reason: if Canada were to become the 51st state, where would Bill and I and the dogs have to go to escape?
Our Sunday afternoon escape brought us springlike weather. On the last trip to Canada, we left blue skies, sunshine and relatively bare ground and drove through snow across the border.
Yesterday, I did not wear a coat while walking along a Kootenay Lake shoreline with Bill and the dogs.
Along with a sense of calm and quiet, there was a blueish gray tone to the scenes.
We had definitely picked the right afternoon to visit Canada. Our trip included a stop at Jimmy's Pub and Grill, where once again the place was quiet and relaxing, and the food was good.
Most of the clientele appeared to be our age, and, who knows, they may have possibly been executing a similar escape plan as ours.
We didn't exactly escape the 24-7 American "noise" and chaos, but we did enjoy relaxing for a couple of hours in the midst of breath-taking Canadian beauty.
Fun trip.
Happy Monday.
Enjoy the photos and the song.
