Yesterday was "Free Fishing Day" in Idaho. Today, by the way, is the same in Washington.
Bill, who has paid for his right to fish on "Free Fishing" and every other legal day, was nice enough to take me to the spot where I thought it would be fun to do my fishing for free.
Whether or not I caught a fish was no big deal because the outing offered so many other pleasant rewards.
It was a wonderful way to spend a summer afternoon/evening. Beautiful drive from our home along the north shore of Lake Pend Oreille on a gorgeous day.
A brief stop in Clark Fork for ice. Yesterday and today are big days in Clark Fork. The annual pig roast is on.
When we rolled through town, we saw motorcycles parked alongside the road and a whole lot of people enjoying themselves and listening to live music.
Twould have been nice to partake in the pig roast, but "Free Fishing Day" lasts only so long, so we continued on down the highway and pulled off across from the rock quarries.
There's a neat little spot for picnics and trails leading through the woods along the shoreline. When we pulled in, another car followed us.
"Bet they're going fishing too," I speculated. Turns out they must have just been taking a time-out for Sam to do his business and get his exercise. Sam needed some guidance because we got to hear his name frequently during the ten minutes or so they spent there.
They soon pulled out, and we had that lovely stretch of river all to ourselves.
We stayed there about 90 minutes---or, as Bill sez, "a two-train" day because we watched two freights heading east on the tracks across the river during our stay.
We came up empty in the fish department.
Still, the beauty and serenity of the river made up for those foxy fish who knew it was "free fishing day" and hunkered down far out of range from our hooks.
On the other hand, the boulders and hidden logs were not the least bit shy about taking a bite out of my tackle supply. That's pretty customary for me.
Four lures down, I started walking back to the pickup, and Bill, who would normally stay until dark, called it a day too.
It was a great outing and perfect ending to a week that I have enjoyed immensely---doing pretty much what I wanted to do. One needs those from time to time. I have appreciated the opportunity.
As for today, Bill will be taking Willie on an angling outing. Since it's not for free, I'm betting the fish will be back to their normal routine.
Happy Sunday.
