Holly: A Winner

We're just getting to know Holly Martin, winner of this year's first-ever Virginia Tibbs Memorial Award at the Spots of Fun Open Horse Show.

In future years, we'll have to see that the award is presented earlier in the horse show, especially on HOT days when exhibitors head for home after their last class.

Until this morning, all I knew was a name, but after Moreen posted a photo of the award on the Spots of Fun site and a congratulations, Holly, who's on Facebook left a comment.

So, I looked her up and befriended her.  I realized that I had seen her Sunday during lunch break at the secretary table.  She and her group all seemed like very nice people, so it was neat to put the face to the award.

And, since she has accepted my "friend" request, I've taken some time to get to know Holly via Facebook and to steal a few of her pictures.

Horses aside, I figure that our little Foster would highly approve of this young lady who has a mini Aussie buddy.

Holly is originally from Coeur d'Alene but now lives in Provo, Utah, where she went to school and currently works in the Brigham Young University Department of chemistry and bio-chemistry.

She's married and it's very apparent she loves and lives all things horses, both in the mountains and inside horse show arenas.

I look forward to learning more about Holly, but for this morning, I'll post the criteria which those who voted for this year's first winner considered.  The family hopes that the spirit of this award will spread and that we get to meet lots of Virginia Tibbs Memorial Award winners in the future.

Congratulations, Holly.

The criteria, created and compiled by my sisters, Barbara and Laurie:

Our parents, Harold and Virginia Tibbs taught us many life skills and responsibilities.  Some of these included horsemanship, sportsmanship, and showmanship.

This weekend, we are honoring our father with the Harold Tibbs Memorial belt buckle for the most versatile horse.

Please help us honor the memory of our mother, Virginia Tibbs, by casting your vote for the competitor who you feel best exemplifies the above qualities.

Also, please place the name or contestant number on the attached tickets and turn them in to the secretary by the end of the show.  You may nominate up to two people.

Criteria for the Virginia Tibbs Memorial award.

  • The  horse always comes first.  It is fed, watered and tied to the trailer in a comfortable spot, or in a stall that has been kept clean.
  • The contestant follows the rules of horse show etiquette and courtesy on the show grounds at all times.
  • The enjoyment of competition, whether winning or not, comes first.
  • Obvious pride is shown in the presentation of the horse.

Thanks for your participation!
