Wetness and Fun in San Diego

Bill and I have learned on our Irish trips to find our own sunshine through the raindrops.

That was good training for yesterday's introduction to our February getaway to San Diego (compliments of daughter Annie).

With all of her traveling, she earns rewards through Alaska Airlines, and, by golly, two years in a row, Ma and Pa Love have been beneficiaries of some of Annie's Alaska miles.

This year we focused our destination around none other than the ZAGS.

With their game scheduled for the Jenny Craig Pavillion tomorrow night, San Diego seemed like a good place to go.

When Bill said he'd never been here, that was all the better.

So, after the most stressful and frustrating preparation for departure ever (thanks to all that snow and cold), Bill and I finally pulled out of the Lovestead driveway Wednesday, telling the 4-legged beloveds that Elisabeth was coming.

They love Elisabeth, and she is always so good to them. Thankfully, also, Elisabeth lives in snow country and has dealt with the fun and games of plowing out, thawing out, etc.

So, we knew all would be well.

We arrived in San Diego a bit later than expected yesterday afternoon when the plane got a late start from Seattle and  while descending for its landing to 500 feet, took a quick, rather dramatic ascension and flew around for a while before coming in for another landing.

The crew received applause when we touched down.

Our pilot announced that a swift tail wind had necessitated the change in plans.

During the day, folks in this area were texting me apologies for the rain.

It would be warm, we rationalized, so we weren't too concerned.

When we went to arrange for our rental car, we met Terry and Denny Scholl who had been on our flight.

I had noticed Denny's University of San Diego ensemble, and Terry told me she had noticed my ZAGS  Game Day "uniform" when I walked to my seat.

Once again at Thrifty, we noted our contrasting loyalties, and that was when I learned that Terry and Denny have good reason to support the Toreros in tomorrow night's sold-out game.

Their son Sam is head coach for San Diego, and they are proud.

They are also very nice, gracious people who appreciate Mark Few and his ZAGS as much as anyone.

The best team will win, Terry said.

And, that is true.

Last night it looked for a while that the ZAGS could go down at the hands of Loyola Marymount, when it was obvious they were having an off, lackluster night.

Happily, they came alive when needed.

We're thinking Saturday night's game will be a barn
burner, for sure.

Anyway, in addition to having ZAGS on the mind, we'll do our share of sight seeing today.

Fortunately, yesterday's all-day downpour had stopped by the time we reached our hotel, where desk clerk Cecelia LOVED the fact that the LOVE's were staying there on Valentine's night.

Later, Bill and I took a walk through a rather littered warehouse district toward some battleships over at the San Diego Naval Station.

Upon arriving there, we learned all was off limits to entry and to photography.

So, our first day ended up being highlighted by dinner at Goodies next door.  Nothing special, 'cept the banana split.

Don't know what we'll do or where we'll end up today besides our motel, but I see blue sky, so we'll make the most of it.

Stay tuned.   As usual, the camera will get a work out.

Happy Friday.
