This is the way it works.
I'm sitting on the deck, chomping off a bit of a Wood's German sausage fresh off the grill.
In mid bite, Bill asks, "You wanna go kayaking tonight."
Having to chew so I don't choke, I look at him while my brain is processing the thought of scurrying to finish eating, to put dinner items away, to change into shorts, grab my cameras and a bottle of frozen water and apologize to the dogs cuz we're leaving them.
By the time the bite of sausage with mustard and melted cheese heads down my throat, I open my mouth and say "No."
A split second later, "Yes."
In those nanno seconds, my brain has decided that all the scurrying without time to take a breath and enjoy some down time after a busy day of mowing lawn, picking blueberries and doing all the other chores, I'd better go.
Summer is winding down, and warm nights like this may not come again soon.
So, that's what happened last night.
Within ten minutes the kayaks were loaded, I had all my photo gear; Bill had his fishing stuff, and off we drive off to Trestle Creek.
Twas just before 6 p.m. when we left.
By 7:30 and after some paddling and some dipping the feet in the water and taking pictures of Bill catching bass, the sun had gone down near Baldy Mountain while the temperature fell enough to feel a pleasant difference from another hot, sweaty day in August.
In that short time, Bill caught three or four fish, a BNSF train rambled by on the tracks just up the hillside, two osprey had taken off from one of the nearby trees in search for fish and about half a dozen boats had come into the dock from a gorgeous day on the lake.
Our short adventure on the Lake Pend Oreille was serene, to say the least.
Still, it's amazing how fast a boat load of exquisite summer images pass through one's mind and find a place in the storage compartment for later reflection.
I can't say enough about the results of last night's split-second decision on the deck to go kayaking while savoring a tasty bite of barbecued sausage.
Simply sublime.
When you live in Lake Pend Oreille country and it's a beautiful evening after a gorgeous but hot summer day, that sort of spontaneity is just how it rolls.
Love it.
Happy Monday.
