It had been three years since the last gathering of the retired Sandpoint High School staff members and family members.
These gatherings have always taken place the same day that current educators return to work.
The late Ron Hunt used to organize them and host them at his house.
After Ron passed away, Duane Ward took the torch. He and his wife Marilyn host "Ron's Party" at their beautiful historic home where Marilyn grew up in South Sandpoint.
I worried, as we drove to town for the party, how much three years was going to show on my colleagues and friends. After all, the Pandemic has taken its toll in many ways.
The party is now over, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised, not only with the turnout but also with the enthusiasm and sheer glee among staff members embracing each other and picking up from where they left off.
Duane said a few words to the group, remembering those who have passed and noting those who are dealing with illness.
These were somber moments of reflection.
In our mutual lives, these people are colleagues and lifelong friends. We taught together, commiserated together, raised our families together and said good bye together.
The everlasting bond for educators runs deep.
After Duane's reflections and a few good stories, the gift of gab---a necessity for teachers---resumed in fine fashion.
It was a gorgeous setting, the food spread was impressive and I can enthusiastically say that "a good time was had by all."
Thank you, Duane and Marilyn.
Ron's Party is once again in fine shape.
Til next year!
This morning I have lots of photos because at this time in our lives those images mean more than ever.
So, even if you had no association with my fellow educators, I know you'll appreciate the sentiment behind posting these for the group and especially for the thousands of students these people collectively guided through their formative years.
Happy Thursday.
Special note: please pass along the word about this blog post to students or fellow educators who may appreciate seeing the photos.
