A little bit of forest-fire smoke is affecting the sky and the sun this morning.
Cousin Rich Aspell
Such a mixture of activity this week.
With a book event, dinner out with family, a retired staff party and a visit with my cousin starting out the week with even more packed into the agenda through the weekend, we even dealt with a potential cattle round-up yesterday.
Soon after Cousin Rich from Chicago arrived and we began catching up in the front yard, a pickup pulled into the driveway.
Two men got out while kids sat in the back.
As Bill walked closer, we could see a hint of familiarity.
Turns out it was our neighbor Wes and his friend. The friend had been pasturing two steers in Wes' pasture across the fence from our woods.
They were missing.
So, eventually the kids got out and Bill took the visitors on a walk through the woods.
They came back----without the steers.
So, we put an announcement on Selle Valley Neighbors. We still don't know if they ever found them, but it made an interesting interlude into a September afternoon.
After the round-up crew left, we continued our visiting and enjoyed some juicy hamburgers with homegrown tomatoes.
Rich is doing some traveling after finding out he would not be returning to the Peace Corps in South Africa until January. He had returned to the states from Mexico, thinking he would be heading overseas yesterday.
Plans changed on the Peace Corps end, so we benefitted with his visit.
Rich had already served some Peace Corps time in Ethiopia but then Covid happened, so he returned home.
Everybody's got their Covid story, it seems. In this case, we've been thrilled to have him visit the Lovestead twice in the last two years.
In other news, learned yesterday from a source named Emma (from Germany) who's in the know: Sandpoint's Brandon Casey will start at right tackle for the University of Montana Grizzlies football in tomorrow's home opener against Louisiana's Northwestern State Demons.
Good luck to the Grizzlies and to Brandon.
Your hometown is proud of you!
Some great news for Idaho public education.
Many thanks to Sandpoint's Luke Mayville, his vision, leadership and his sea of volunteers across the state for inspiring this significant, historic and positive move by the governor and the Idaho State Legislature.
Reclaim Idaho
BREAKING: In a big victory for Reclaim Idaho volunteers across the state, the Legislature has voted to increase public school funding by $410 million.
This is the largest investment in decades, & would be unthinkable without the Quality Education Act campaign.

Happy Friday to all.
