Thursday This, That and TBT

It's just spittin' rain out there right now.

Earlier, when I took the dogs out for the first time, a brisk, warm wind was blowing and no rain was falling.

So, I think we've weathered the bulk of the wet.  All inhabitants of this household won't mind that a bit.

Yesterday, as the rain came down steadily, our Lovestead family of four (two boys, Bill and Foster and two girls, Marianne and Bridie) gave ourselves a break from cabin fever and drove around to survey how high the area streams were.

It was dark and gloomy, but we could easily see that rivers had filled up almost to the brim and, in some cases, had overflowed into other lowlands.

The plus side of all this flooding is that the ground hasn't completely frozen for the winter and warmer temperatures have provided some opportunities for the excess rain to soak into the ground.

So, I think we've made it past the flooding concerns.

And, the upcoming days should be a bit brighter.  That's a nice thought, considering that today marks just two more weeks of shorter days.

Through this wet weather, we've seen a lot of birds, and even they have looked a bit ragged from so much wetness.

Nice for all of us creatures to have that nonstop rain in the rear view mirror.

CAGIN’ QUEENS LOSE FIRST TILT

The ladies playing competitive basketball at SHS, “The Cagin’ Queens” – were baptized under fire Monday when their first experience with competitive cage maneuvers ended in a loss to a veteran Post Falls squad by a 30-20 score.

“I’m not at all unhappy with the girls,” said Coach Holly Aldridge, “I think they did very well considering what they started with.” The SHS team is in its experimental first year and judging from their performances Monday, the sport is here to stay.

Starla Rigby led the Queens with 10 points and Monica Travers added six. Janet Snedden and Cindy Vig each added 2 points.

Thursday Throwbacks . . . .

As we remember this significant day in modern American history, it becomes more and more evident that the influence of the generation who experienced and responded to the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, is fading.

Many, who also lived through the Great Depression, have passed on.  With their passing, the values they instilled, because of their own life experiences, seem to be diminishing.

Wouldn't it be nice, as a tribute to what we call the Greatest Generation of the Pearl Harbor era, if we could reclaim some of those values and pass them on to another generation.

Their principles seemed to get those of my generation through our lives, so why not keep proven principles of respect, honesty, compassion, hard work, love of country and others, responsibility, etc. going?

Just a thought.
