Slop Day; Game Day; TBT

It was pretty for a couple of hours, but after the sky had emptied, dumping 6-8 inches of snow, the rains came and hung around most of the night.

So, yesterday morning's beauty (above) has turned to this morning's slop.

Wet pant-leg season is upon us,  at least for today.

Mother Nature saved the best of her winter wrath for last, I'm guessing after enduring yesterday's misery.

Twas the hardest plowing all winter with wet, heavy and gluey snow to move.

None of it moved very easily, but at least between my work on the tractor and Bill's with the snow blower, we cleaned out some walking paths along with the driveway and the lane.

Those paths eventually turned to a combination of snow and water.

Poor little Foster had an awful time last night navigating through the water and discovering that the open areas where he could go off to his potty ground were blocked off by mounds of wet snow or slushy lakes.

He finally gave up sniffing after about 15 minutes out there in the pouring rain.  The lane would have to do.

I always feel so sorry for him when it snows cuz it totally disrupts his method of figuring out where the heck he's going.  Happily, he's a pretty resilient little guy.

This morning's trips outside weren't too bad because, at least, the rain has stopped and it feels balmy out there.

On a more positive note, Bill braved the slop and drove into Spokane to watch the Gonzaga women easily win their last game and ending their WCC season with a perfect 16-0 record.

Their overall record is pretty impressive too:  29-2. They've won the league championship; now they'll await the tournament.

Bill is hoping that their body of work will open the door for Spokane to host some of the NCAA women's tournament games.

Congratulations to this amazing team and their staff.

BIG Game Day

First, the Sandpoint High boys basketball team takes on Pocatello in 4A competition at the Idaho State Tournament, while Clark Fork tips off against Camas County.

Both games are at 1 p.m. PST.

Good luck to both local teams.

And, then we get to stay up late tonight when Gonzaga and San Francisco men's teams meet

in San Francisco. This one should be another nail biter, as both teams have almost identical records.

A Few Thursday Throwbacks . . . .

Remember back in the early Pandemic days, this was so hard. It was a beautiful day for a hike, but sad that Annie had to drive from Seattle and we drove from Sandpoint so we could visit.

The late Pearl Irwin was a longtime family friend and a remarkable horse woman.

Our family bought the Saddlebred mare in the picture from Pearl.  Her name was Janis Love, and she raised my mother's most favorite horse Cricket.

Cricket was half Arabian and half Saddlebred.  She was a chestnut with had four white stockings and a strip. Beautiful horse.

Below:  I ran across this photo of one of my mother's notecards.  It was always one of my favorites.  It depicts an old barn at Herman Lake in Boundary County.

In her past professional life, our daughter-in-law Debbie worked for the Girl Scouts in both Southern Idaho and in North Idaho and Eastern Washington.  Her desk in this photo was in the old Sandpoint City Hall.

Later, Debbie moved down the block near the Panida Theater and served as executive director of Pend Oreille Arts Counsel. For several years, she has worked as the beloved director of the Bonner Community Food Bank.

She has left a wonderful mark on all three organizations.

This was the good ol' days here at the Lovestead when the magnificent double-trunked Lodgepole pine still stood in the middle of our far pasture.  Bill started the Lodgepole Society where members were inducted in a ceremony near the tree.

When that tree crashed to the ground a few years back, a fun aspect of living on this place and hosting company ended.

We filled two yellow field books with comments from Lodgepole Society inductees. Above, Kari Saccamanno and her Sage were being inducted.

It was a fun day and a great visit with my friend and former SHS colleague Myra Lewis several years ago when we went to her Clark Fork ranch for some picture taking.

Myra was one of four horse lovers featured in a story I wrote for Sandpoint Magazine about the horse industry in Bonner County.
