Saturday Slight

My sun golds are ripening and the sweet flavor is heavenly.

Yesterday, while watering, I discovered a garden phenomenon which, in my lifetime, has only appeared in a story book.

My garden may not be the best, as far as production, but it does include a real-life version of Jack and the Beanstalk.

I had noticed something extra on the stem of one of my sunflowers.  Upon closer inspection, I saw that the something extra was an extra stem with some blossoms wrapping itself around the sunflower.

Bean blossoms.

The garden sunflowers do run along the bean rows.

One bean plant apparently decided simple blossoms hanging from its stems was kinda boring.

So, it set off on an adventure, winding its way up a nearby sunflower, which now stands about eight feet tall.

I could see blossoms near the top.  I don't know how tall the sunflower will grow, but I'm betting the blossoms from the bean plant have hitched a ride to go as far into the air as possible.

Now, I'm waiting for the next big chapter in the bean blossom adventure:  when the beans sprout.

Will I have to get a ladder to pick those green beans?

Stay tuned.

We have another phenomenon around this place.

Annie discovered it yesterday while walking in the woods south of the house.

She took a picture, so I had to go see for myself.

As I walked through an open area, I heard another human, sitting over on his deck at the house next door.

"Where's the deer?"  I asked.

"What deer?" he replied.

"You know what I'm talking about," I said.

"Oh, that's my guard deer," he yelled back. "It's on that trail where you haven't mowed for a couple of weeks."

With sausages cooking on the stove, I wasted no time waving good bye and walking over to the deer, which actually has eyes in the back of its head.

A front view shows that maybe its deer vision is a bit obstructed with antlers growing out of its snout, right in front of those eyes.

The deer are always watching, they say, but this one might not be getting a full view of which flowers to eat on its next trip through my yard.

Nice work, Steve! 😍

Last evening we attended a celebration at Beyond Hope Resort, honoring the memory of a much-beloved local nurse and good friend to all.

It was an informal outdoor affair, with friends and family gathered for what Peg would have loved:  just some good-time visiting.

Pretty much everyone there had their own unique Peg O'Sullivan stories.  In one case, her daughter Stephanie noted how everyone would have loved having her for a mom because of her zest for life and for providing good memories.

It was a beautiful evening with music by Harold's IGA (Ben Olson, publisher of the Sandpoint Reader, singing and playing guitar.  Peg's daughter Hailey also agreed to share her beautifully trained voice, singing "Summertime."

Peg would have loved every minute.

I hadn't seen Nancy Miller in a long time.  She has that enviable knack for not changing a bit over the years.

Peg liked tennis and she collected socks.  Many attendees took home a pair as a way of remembering her.

Today we are very fortunate to have a lake experience as part of our anniversary celebration.

The kids have arranged for a boat, so the family will gather this afternoon and enjoy some time on beautiful Lake Pend Oreille.

Should be fun.

Happy Saturday.
