I've seen four yellow school buses go down our road this morning.
Two went by while I was taking the horses to pasture, but I was lucky when the third passed by.
The driver even waved as I stood by our paperbox and snapped some photos.
It's the first day of school in Lake Pend Oreille School District No. 84.
And, it looks like a classic September day for kids to go to their classes for the first time and enjoy their noon hours.
I experienced first days 49 times in my life---twelve years as a student in Sandpoint, riding the yellow school buses, four years at the University of Idaho walking to class and 33 years driving from home to the school.
A highlight during those last 33 years occurred several times. My former student turned colleague Jayne Davis would come to my classroom before school with a vase of cosmos and other fall flowers.
It was a very thoughtful gesture and always appreciated.
To all professionals who are starting this school year with hopes of enlightening, inspiring and teaching the students, I wish you the best of days and the best of years.
The same goes for the support staff, including that nice bus driver who waved as she drove down South Center Valley Road.
Special wishes go out to our son Willie as he begins his year teaching at Sandpoint High School.
Let's hope the day and the school year go well for all.

Cindy posted that the Pope was praying for one of her friends.
This is also the first official day of Pope Francis' long trip to Asia.
The Pope, his staff and the Vatican press have flown a long way from Rome to Indonesia.
While on the flight, Pope Francis visited with members of the press corps, including Vatican Bureau Chief for Catholic News Service Cindy Wooden.
Cindy is a family friend and former Sandpoint High student. It's always a thrill when she post photos of her experiences flying with Pope Francis and covering his events.
As always, Cindy, we are so proud of you.
Bill and I are proud of our daughter Annie also.
Like Cindy, she's a world traveler. The two met in Rome once.
Annie has bounced back from a downer day and put in the miles on her 16th day of walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain.
So, check out today's news.
Somebody left these in the road in front of our house. I'm wondering if they dropped them off for Annie, the flipflop queen.
Finally, today is THAT day when Bill and I finally get to have our Covid boosters.
We'll do that a little later this morning, and we both hope that this one is like the last with little or no side effects. If not, we're prepared for the overnight misery.
And, if tomorrow's post isn't loaded with photos, you'll know why.
It's a relief knowing that the vaccine is finally available and that we can feel confident that we are protected as much as possible on our trip.
