It's Happening . . .

I took this photo while bringing in this morning's paper.
Nice to have the early-morning light returning.

Today, I turned off my flashlight on the last leg of Bridie's and my morning walk.

Every morning we go out at the same time, never varying more than a minute or two.

This particular walk is the second of the day after the dogs go out for their early morning relief.

Usually we walk completely around the yard and then head into the woods.

This morning I decided against the woods because we had a strong cold wind blowing. Trees and branches in our woods have continued to fall in even slightly windy conditions since that bizarre and devastating wind storm in late September.

So, it's probably a good idea to stay out of the woods, especially in the dark.

This morning Bridie and walked the perimeter of the hay field, and by the time we reached the end of the lane where the field begins, I could see a good hint of daylight.

So, I turned the flashlight off, and voila, it was dawn and I could see everything without the help of the light.

Such an exhilarating feeling to know that we are, at last, coming out of the darkness into the light.

Every morning from now on will be incrementally more fun as I need the flashlight less and less.

This morning Schweitzer (pictured above) has 153 inches of snow.

We have maybe 1.5 inches.

If ever there were a perfect weather scenario for those who love to ski and those who don't, this winter season has dished it out.

Skiers and ski and walkers can walk.

Yesterday, while in town, I drove to City Beach and saw walkers, many with dogs, enjoying their space, the fresh air and views of the lake and the mountains.

I also talked to my next-door neighbors, Shawn and Becky.  They were out on a walk, enjoying the Meserve Preserve.

The gift of walking without trudging or sliding this winter has been the ultimate.

I hope it continues, and I'll hope that with no guilt about skiers and boarders at Schweitzer being deprived of their fun.

Plus, the more the weather holds like it has for several weeks, the fewer times we'll have to pick up a shovel.

And, that is a good thing.

It's the first Friday in January, and I've written three checks and remembered the correct year each time.

So, I guess I'm off to a good start, mentally.

That said, my brain is devoid of discussion topics that would be suitable for the blog.

Unfortunately, there are more than enough topics where I have strong opinions but prefer not to bring them up.

Am learning something in my later years.

After all, the AllState CEO implored in his message yesterday that we try to get along.

Not a bad goal.

So, will just wish all a Happy Friday.

Instead of getting in trouble talking, go walking.

We can do it this year, so let's not squander the opportunities.

My next walk:  after morning chores, taking little Foster for his walk around the Lovestead.
