Inscription Rock: a 9-11 Geocache Find

My simple remembrance for the ten-year anniversary of 9-11-01 was putting the American flag out at the end of the driveway.

I remember the Sunday after the attack standing at the end of the walking bridge across Lake Pend Oreille with a small group of others who wanted to express their patriotism for our country.

So, we dressed in red, white and blue,  took our flags along and waved them at all vehicles passing by on the main bridge.  We received hundreds of honks and waves in response.

My 80-year-old mother was with me that day.  Later, we drove around Sandpoint and marveled at the show of patriotism on storefronts and homes all around the community.

I won't forget that day ever, just like I won't forget the day of the attacks.

Bill and I watched a few segments of the remembrance ceremonies yesterday morning and last night.

We spent the afternoon, hiking in one of my most favorite spots on earth, Boulder Meadows.

And, our purpose turned out twofold:  we found a geocache on "Inscription Rock," and we thought about how that rock's faded inscription, etched so long ago possibly by a sheepherder tending his sheep in the meadows circa 1920s,  went well with the tone of the day.

Jesus, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.  –Ephesians 1:7 KJV.

The actual geocache was placed there a year or so ago by our friends, Roley and Janice Schoonover, owners of Western Pleasure Guest Ranch.  I used information about the cache in an upcoming story about equine geocaching, which should appear in next month's Appaloosa Journal.

Bill had heard my tale about the story and decided he wanted to find the cache yesterday.

So, Bill, the doggies and I set out on the .9 mile hike to the cache site.  And, of course, we enjoyed some breath-taking moments while walking through the now yellowed grass in the meadows.

After finding the cache, Bill asked me to call Janice.  Turns out she was busy welcoming participants for their adult horsemanship camp this week.  Quick turnaround from the big wedding the night before.

So, her daughter Danielle, also an avid geocacher, said she'd let Janice know we found the cache.

It was another great experience in this beautiful spot east of Naples, and it turned out to be more inspirational than ever, considering the day.
