Not as much grousing around here this morning as the initial grumbling reaction to wet and sloppy snow has passed. I'm making the transition from doing morning chores with relatively light clothing to putting on lots of extras, including barn boots and snow pants.
This morning the snow pants saved my pant legs from rings of slop. My gloves stayed dry through the whole chore process, where yesterday one touch of the barn door latch turned them soggy.
I told Bill that a few loads of gravel will be coming down the lane today to be dumped at the barnyard gate, where walking this morning was gooey and soft.
Without the extra gravel, only a few days of horses going back and forth through that area with this wet weather would mean sinking in deeper and deeper each day. Ain't fun.
When I complain about winter, my antagonism stems directly from how much the animals have to suffer when conditions are like they are these past two days.
For example, Heather wanted out of the barn this morning, but she very reluctantly stepped into the barnyard.
If there's any animal that hates slop worse than people, it's horses. They don't like getting their feet dirty. Sadly, our barnyard turns to slop almost instantly with rain and wet snow.
This morning, it's a warm, quiet and dry day compared to yesterday.
We braved the snowy roads last night to attend an "end-of-the-season" dinner party with our new "family." That would be Inland Forest Management, owned by Mike Wolcott and Dick Bradetich.
After one month of work, Bill has been welcomed into the group with open arms. The owners treated us to a nice dinner (prepared by the "yum-yum" Hoot Owl). Afterward they treated everyone to generous words of praise and thanks and then offered some fun gifts, including flowers for all the spouses.
We had a great time, and I enjoyed seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new friends of our new "family" as Mike and Dick like to call it.
The snow had settled down by the time we left the party, and we arrived home in time to watch the last quarter of the COUGS game against Arizona State. I'm so happy for coach Paul Wulff this morning because his team pulled off an exciting and convincing victory.
We were not so happy in the afternoon, especially at the end, when Boise State lost to Texas Tech by one point. Another very exciting game with a Texas Tech quarterback, who is sure to make it in the NFL.
We felt bad not only for the Broncos but for our own selfish reasons. BSU has provided us with reason to be excited through almost half the winter with their outstanding football, ongoing victories and high rankings.
In our household, for football, it's been BSU and for basketball, the ZAGS.
A lot of pressure on Mark Few's team now to maintain the passion they instill in so many of their fans. And, we'll be watching "past our bedtime" tomorrow night when they take on WSU.
One more week before the big Thanksgiving holiday. Annie will be coming home a couple of days before Thanksgiving, so I'll be busy this week, getting the house spit-shined and conferring with my sisters on who's gonna bring what to dinner.
Hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner. Time is marching on, and I'm starting my countdown until the shortest day of the year. Would 38 days be correct?
Lots of darkness yet to come, but it's pretty and bright outside right now, so I'll go take on the day.
Happy Sunday.
