Young' Uns and Good Stuff

I'm pleased to be on the notifying list when new life starts appearing at our neighbors' farm up the road.

Got a note yesterday---just as I was frying up some burgers--- that a set of twins and their mom could be found in the newborn stall at Fern Ridge Hereford Ranch.

So, I turned the stove down to low and told Bill I'd be gone for about 15 minutes, grabbed my camera and drove up the "SMOOTH" road to Jack Filipowski's barn.

As an aside:  Many thanks to Steve Klatt and the Bonner County Roads crew, et. al. for the vast improvement on our road this week.

When I arrived, the friendly yellow barn cat greeted me from above, and as I looked toward the well-bedded stall, there were Mom and her twins.

One decided shortly after my arrival that it was time to get up, and I was thinking he might be thinking that Mom should get up too.  She had other ideas as she lay there, relaxed in the comfortable setting.

I'm thinking she may have needed her rest after giving birth to those two big babies.

As the one little guy walked around surveying the situation, the other just kept on napping.

I took a few photos and then went on my way.

Last year I visited the barn several times during calving season, thoroughly enjoying all the new life.

And, so another year has begun, and I'll probably go up there a time or two as the calves continue to make their appearance in this world.

Calving time definitely serves as a harbinger of early spring.  Conditions in North Idaho aren't always the best, but the calves, like people, are pretty resilient, and they tough it out.

Yesterday I also paid a visit to another baby, little CB.  He'll be six months old in a few days.

Since his arrival at my sisters' place in early December, CB has made himself fully at home and has come to expect that when he sees me, there's some nice massaging or brushing to enjoy.

Out there in that corral, he has to share the TLC with the other three, but he's a smart little guy (yes, resilient like the calves and the people), and he holds his own.

He, like his buddies, has become quite prolific at "fence art."

The usual strategy is to give that fence a good daily chew down, and eventually when they finally bite a section of board clear through, the resident somewhat disgusted humans will bring a fresh palette for their dental creativity.

CB learned his role as a fence artist rather quickly, and he puts in his fair share of time as part of the team of "artists."

At my house, the fence art occasionally comes to a quick halt when that electric wire reaches out and bites back.

Anyway, it's fun when the young'uns are around, learning about the world and delighting us with their cuteness!

In other news, it's gonna be a fun weekend cuz Annie's coming tonight and staying through until Monday so she can help Laura aka Swiss Miss experience her first Super Sunday.

We're not too excited about the game itself, but we do have some Love family traditions.  The guys plan and bring the main dishes.  For Bill, it's the pizzas while Willie brings his homemade chili.  Debbie told me chicken wings will be coming too.

I'll be figuring out the accessories to add to the spread.

So, we'll pace ourselves as we take in all the lead up and the game and the commercials and the halftime and the food and beverages.

We also have a ZAGS game tomorrow at my sisters' house.  Congrats to the ZAGS on their win last night in a very exciting game with San Diego.  I read this morning that it's now 21 straight years for the ZAGS to have at least 20 games in a season.  Not bad.

And, speaking of basketball, the Lady Bulldogs won a big one last night against Moscow, remaining 4-0 in league. They'll be playing in the tournament sometime next week which determines if they go to State.

The team also made the front page of the local paper this morning for their community service at the Bonner Community Food Bank. Twas a very nice story.

As a proud mom-in-law of the food bank director and proud mom of one of the Lady Bulldog coaches, I can tell you my buttons are popping this morning.

Both Willie and Debbie are leaving their mark on this community and in such a good way.

Happy Friday.
