Let's go alliterative in describing our Independence Day celebration yesterday: flags, family, friends, food, flowers and fireworks.
All played a part to make the day another treasured memory.
The farthest I got away from home yesterday was a walk next door where the Meserve clan and human and canine friends were gathered for a holiday of camping, relaxing and fun.
Bill had gone to town for a few barbecue supplies, so it was a good time to sneak away and do some catching up with my neighbors.
Otherwise, I spent the entire day getting ready for the barbecue, actually relaxing from time to time and enjoying the barbecue and its aftermath.
My sisters, Willie and Debbie and their friends Andrew, Alicia and Emma were our guests.
After filling plates with pulled pork, homemade tater salad, Wood's German sausages, tossed salad, baked homegrown asparagus, beans and LOTS OF VEGGIES for Miss Emma, we spent time strolling around outside visiting with horses and talking gardening and plucking flowers for Emma.
Pretty simple stuff but very satisfying.
The usual fireworks here at the Lovestead did not happen this year. Instead, while the fireworks show next door at the Meserve Preserve was beginning, we watched the musical celebrations at the U.S. Capitol and later New York on TV.
During that time, Annie and Justine had already begun their July 5th in Spain. We exchanged a few Whats Apps back and forth, and soon they had taken off from Santiago, bound for Madrid.
The Camino pilgrimage had ended, and walkers who had spent nearly two weeks together were headed their separate ways. I'm sure it's been a bittersweet day.
Annie and Justine eventually parted company in Madrid (that's their last selfie below), and, a few hours ago, Annie landed in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she'll spend the next few days exploring and hiking.
Meanwhile, for Justine, it's still a long day ahead as she flew on to London, then Phoenix and finally Seattle to meet her family later this evening.
Quite a day of just enjoying and absorbing long-held traditions while observing some new chapters in people's lives.
Fourth of July, 2018, is now in the books. I'd say for many of us, who enjoyed our individual styles of celebration, it was a great read!
The flags, friends, family, food, fireworks and flowers: all good!
Happy Thursday.
