This flag flies from a post at the Selle Valley Carden School just a mile or so away from where we live.
In my mind, what happens pretty much every day at this lovely rural school, next to a big farm field, represents the best of America: children learning, children experiencing the natural world and children practicing good citizenship pretty much anywhere ya see them.
Behind these activities are supportive hard-working adults--teachers, parents, volunteers, all guiding these children to develop honorable principles and cherished values as they learn about and participate in the world around them.
My experiences over the years with the children attending the Selle Valley Carden School have always been positive, invigorating and reassuring as I've been a recipient of their love, their generosity, their wonderful manners and their youthful passion for embracing wonderful opportunities that await in the world around them.
And, yes, like with most Americans, the independent spirit abounds among Selle Valley Carden School students and staff.
Today on this Independence Day aka Fourth of July celebration 2018, I salute these folks, both young and old, who exemplify beautifully what I know and appreciate to be the American way.
They represent an uplifting sense of hope for this country.
And, for that, we can celebrate.
May you all have a wonderful and safe holiday.
