Voting Day, WCC Finals

Lots going on around here today, so this post will be fairly brief.

Bill and I will be going soon to our polling place to cast our "Yes" votes for today's school levy.

Erring on the side of supporting public education is seldom a problem in my mind.

There's plenty of positive proof in the pudding to outweigh the occasional flaws we might see from time to time, as we would in any public entity.

I saw a perfect example of the power of our local public education system while listening to 2003 SHS graduate Luke Mayville address a panel at the Idaho Legislature yesterday and later during a news conference.

Luke's mission:  convince legislators to rethink proposed legislation aimed at restricting the right of Idaho citizens to organize and pass ballot initiatives.

In both his presentation to the panel and during the news conference, Luke used his talents, his knowledge, his cool head and, yes, his education to provide specific information and pertinent examples illustrating why the proposed legislation should not pass.

Luke is one of the multitude of local graduates who make a positive difference in this world and who bring great pride to those of us who have watched their pathway toward success.

Stories like Luke's happen every day because of ongoing support for public education.

So, I submit that it's a "no brainer" to continue this support.

Our students and staff deserve it.

So, we'll do our part.

On another front which received my undivided attention yesterday, the ZAGS games in Las Vegas gave fans their money's worth.

Both the women and men's teams won, but in one case it was a Pyrrhic victory (came at a high price).

Just had to use that word clues word today because the women's game illustrated its meaning.

Sadly, two key players for the ZAGS, Laura Stockton and Jill Townsend suffered what most commentators view as season-ending injuries.

The team played on, though, in a double overtime nail biter AND all team members stepped up to the plate to win by one point in the final second.

Today the women play their current nemesis BYU at 1 p.m. PDT for the WCC Tournament championship.  The game can be viewed on ESPNU.

Two of Gonzaga's three losses have come at the hands of BYU, so it should be a thriller.

Last night's men's game had its share of drama but, all around in a good way.

The crowd at the Orleans Arena roared, and I'm sure countless couch potatoes around the world yelled with glee every time the ZAGS Killian Tillie dropped another 3.

Killian has sat on the bench most of the season with two different injuries, so his comeback was welcome and his game was nearly flawless.

As was most of the game on the part of virtually every ZAG.  It was just plain pretty basketball, leading to a big win.

Mark Few's ZAGS take to the floor tonight at 6 p.m. PDT on ESPN, tipping off against their perennial rival Saint Mary's.

GO, ZAGS, and special thanks to all who GO to the polls today to support the levy.

Happy Tuesday.
