Fall just got a bit busier, I do believe.
If the coat of ice on the car this morning was any indicator, I'll soon be pulling lots of plants from my garden and hauling them off-----'cept the 'maters, I hope.
They slept under tarps last night.
We experienced a hard frost here overnight and may have another one tonight before it warms up and another segment of late summer comes.
This time last year I had already pulled up my garden, so the frost last night was not too surprising or disappointing.
It's time.
It will be nice to get those areas cleaned up and ready for next spring's gardening.
Yesterday turned out to be a productive day around here. Once Bill had headed off to Grouse Creek to cut wood, I climbed aboard the tractor and headed to our woods.
This morning, thanks to the brush hog, a series of trails throughout the woods opens up some pleasant walking or riding areas.
And, happily the pathways should stay that way for the winter.
If we only had a snow hog, we could keep those trails open the year round.
Brush hogging in the fall tops my list of fun things to do on a farm. The air is fresh and crisp, the views of ever-changing color breath-taking and the satisfaction of neatly groomed areas is supreme.
Once the tractor work reached a good stopping point, I spent some time in the house, cutting up my giant red tomatoes and putting them on a baking sheet for freezing. Now, that batch is in a gallon freezer bag in the freezer.
We also have mousetraps prepared with peanut butter treats for those pesky, often scary intruders who like to find the warmth of the house once the frosty nights begin.
Our series of "pick it up and throw it out" projects also saw some progress yesterday when I loaded up the big stack of boxes behind the dog couch in the garage and hauled them off to the dump, along with several pairs of well-worn jeans.
It's a good feeling to get rid of that stuff. I just don't know why we don't do it on a regular basis.
Most of the day was downright gorgeous, especially with the doggies and horses enjoying themselves, but a surprising rain and wind storm came up later in the afternoon.
Another cleansing and some more moisture before several days of perfect fall weather---60-70s and nights in the 40s.
Doesn't get any better than that. BusYness will be fun.
Happy Sunday.
