Snow cones? Anyone? Anyone? |
Yesterday morning, Bill observed that we were getting some Hallmark movie snow.
" . . . those fake-looking flakes in the story about the young lady in the country town whose parents' business is going down . . . the handsome, rich man from the city shows up . . . swoops her off her feet . . . while the poor, loyal, hard-working country guy who's loved her all along just deals with it . . . but, happily, marries her in the end when he helps solve the parent's business dilemma."
Well, part of that narrative above was Bill's. I added the rest.
Back in the day when we could all be in the house together at holiday time, Hallmark movie marathons ran constantly cuz Annie controls the remote when she's home.
Eventually, Bill got into those movies, and I think he kinda liked them, so when those light snowflakes kept falling all morning, Bill was feeling a touch of Hallmark nostalia.
It snowed Hallmark style most of the day yesterday, never really leaving it's mark but dropping enough snow dust on the ground to leave tracks and for doggies to frolic about in their own Hallmark moods.
In the morning, all three doggies joined me on a walk in the woods. Kiwi, in her golden-girl state is usually more selective in her trips from the garage. It's gotta be Bill, and he needs to be going to work out at the wood shed.
For some reason, though, yesterday, after her "bringing-in-the- wood" chores, Kiwi actually joined me and the other dogs on another walk. Bill and I marvel at her heart and her desire at almost 16 to make that body move and to be a part of the action.
The south woods provide a nice area for walking during most of the winter. They're sheltered enough that the snow doesn't get too deep, and the ground surface is as cushiony as it gets with all the layers of pine needles.
Plus, the area is pretty with its park-like look.
Later, in the day, I decided to designate Liam as "top dog." Grabbing a leash and summoning him to the Subaru, I told him he could come with me today.
Driving to the Sunnyside Fish and Game wildlife management area, I discovered that Liam and I would be the only invaders in the area which is surrounded by a slough and, to the south, Lake Pend Oreille.
I felt a bit nervous because of my camera, my walking stick and a sometimes energetic Liam on leash.
So, every step was taken with great caution, as that Hallmark snow was hiding patches of ice on the trail. We ended up avoiding the trail, and, at first, our hike did feel a bit on the edgy side.
When your Border Collie has an active nose surveying scents every inch of the way along with a well-developed sideways tension on the leash, it's a bit challenging.
Soon, however, good ol' Liam settled down and listened to every soft-spoken command coming from my lips.
"This way," topped the list, and with great ease, the minute he heard the two words, he responded accordingly.
We ended up having a great 45 minutes or so, walking some shoreline, maneuvering around some blow down near the trail and just enjoying the beautiful swimming and low key picnic area along the lake shore.
No swimming right now cuz of lake drawdown, but ample shoreline walking.
I dropped Liam's leash in this spot, and he didn't disappoint. Lots of sniffing still, but coming every time I called to make sure he didn't get out of sight.
Heck, I think our trip to Sunnyside yesterday could make a nice side scene for a Hallmark movie.
The area is exquisitely beautiful and when a beautiful black and white Border Collie is darting in and out around stunning Ponderosa pine trees, it doesn't get any better.
I've noticed in the last week or so that a touch of Hallmark life has taken over my mind----sleeping clear through the night along with finding more time to embrace the pure bliss of each day.
It's been nice. Even Foster seems to be happier cuz Mom's a lot quieter in the house whenever the TV is on.
Maybe I'll even sit with Foster and watch a Hallmark movie today.
Happy Wednesday.
For any of those Hallmark rich men from the city who want to some in, swoop up their future bride and live in rural Heaven, the Wall Street Journal featured this story today about a chateau on the shores of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille.
Only, $9 million plus.
